About the Unit

This 48-bed unit is dedicated to ortho/neuro/trauma, specializing in diagnoses such as total knee replacements, total hip replacements, spinal fusions, and fractured hips. The unit is Stroke and Trauma certified and provides additional education every three months to enhance patient care. The multidisciplinary team includes RNs, nurse techs, nursing assistants, unit secretaries, PT/OT, an orthopedic care coordinator, and case managers. Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-6, and Nurse Assistant ratio is 1:8-10.

Serving the community since 1965, it has grown into a Level II trauma center and serves as the base teaching hospital for Michigan State University.

Responsibilities

• Perform various nursing care tasks and treatments on assigned patients under the supervision of a Nurse, following hospital policies and procedures.
• Provide routine bedside nursing activities, including bathing, personal grooming, ambulating, moving, and turning patients.
• Assist patients with bedpans or urinary devices, make patient beds, and care for personal property.
• Assist in performing additional nursing procedures such as catheterizations, suctioning, irrigating colostomies, applying restraints, giving enemas, douches, sitz baths, or pericare.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled and attending an accredited school of registered nursing.
• May be enrolled in an (accredited) Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (BSN) or Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) Program. Note: ADN graduates will be required to sign a BSN completion agreement upon hire/placement in a graduate nurse position.
• Required: RN from another state awaiting Michigan Licensure, or Graduate Nurse from an accredited school of nursing awaiting retake of NCLEX or awaiting results of the last exam.
• Transcripts must be provided at the time of hire and may be requested for review periodically.
• High School Diploma required.
• Evidence of successful completion of adult medical-surgical rotations – theory and clinical.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from AHA (American Heart Association) or ARC (American Red Cross) required upon hire.

Schedule

Part-time, night shift (7:00 P.M. - 7:30 A.M.), 4-12 hour shifts over 6 weeks. Weekend frequency varies.
