About the Role

At Oceans Behavioral Hospital Abilene, we are passionate about helping adolescents, adults, and seniors manage the challenges associated with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. The Nurse Supervisor provides supervision of all patient care areas in the hospital, serving as a managerial and clinical link between the Director of Nursing and/or Nurse Manager and department direction in their absence. This role promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization while meeting the requirements and essential functions of a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient care requirements on each unit by making rounds throughout all areas of the hospital.
• Ensure departmental staffing plans are implemented appropriately and serve as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems.
• Assist staff in efficiently utilizing resources to meet patient care requirements and professional responsibilities.
• Provide immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication of incidents to the appropriate manager and director.
• Respond to emergency situations and assist as necessary.
• Act as a resource in identifying and solving administrative/operational problems.
• Interpret and ensure adherence to hospital and nursing philosophy, policies, and procedures.
• Report significant incidents (e.g., unusual patient/family concerns, physician issues, utility outages, security problems, regulatory calls, or safety issues) to the administrator-on-call or DON/Nurse Manager.
• Provide ongoing feedback, both verbal and written, to staff on performance in collaboration with DON/Nurse Manager.
• Assist with nursing personnel performance evaluations and identify staff needs for continuing education.
• Provide education, remediation, and assessment of skills competencies as directed.
• Monitor documentation for adherence to rules and regulations and ensure environment of care requirements are met (e.g., quality logs, infection control practices).
• Utilize the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating) to develop individualized plans of care and treatment modalities.
• Identify expected outcomes, prescribe interventions, and evaluate effectiveness in relation to patient progress.
• Conduct ongoing patient assessments from admission to discharge and initiate crisis intervention as needed.
• Provide patient and family/significant other education on identified learning needs.
• Demonstrate knowledge of psychiatric disorders and implement appropriate nursing interventions.
• Administer medications safely, recognize adverse drug reactions, and provide medication education.
• Review, revise, and update medical records within facility guidelines and timeframes.
• Transcribe and implement physician’s orders and document care, progress, and responses accurately.
• Follow up on client care responsibilities and communicate incomplete assignments or current needs to staff for continuity of care.
• Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum Associate Degree in Nursing.
• Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the resident working state.
• Minimum of 3 years of Registered Nursing experience.
• Psychiatric nursing experience required.
• Must successfully complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.

• Strong communication skills, both oral and written, to achieve positive results with internal and external customers.
• Highly organized with an understanding and sensitivity to serving culturally diverse and special needs populations (e.g., Chronically Mentally Ill, Geriatric, Chemical Dependency).
• Knowledge of normal physical and emotional development.
• Critical thinking abilities for continuous improvement of patient care.
• Self-confidence and conceptual thinking to lead and direct others.
• Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others professionally.

Work Environment

• Subject to frequent interruptions and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
• High-paced and potentially stressful atmosphere; must cope mentally and physically.
• May experience disagreeable odors, sights, and unpredictable patient behavior.
• Approximately 90% or more of time spent indoors, with protection from weather but not necessarily temperature changes.
