Nurse Supervisor Nights

About the role

The Nurse Supervisor provides supervision of all patient care areas in the hospital, applying independent judgment in interpreting hospital and nursing policies and procedures. The role serves as a managerial and clinical link between the Director of Nursing and/or Nurse Manager and department staff during their absence, promoting the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

Responsibilities

• Assume primary leadership accountability for milieu management and directing patient care activities of nursing staff.
• Maintain standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy, governing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards.
• Assess patients using the nursing process to create individualized plans of care; implement interventions; evaluate outcomes consistent with policy and patient condition.
• Interpret age/disability-specific information appropriate to the client population served.
• Ensure safe medication delivery in accordance with policies, physician orders, and current practice.
• Provide thorough, accurate reporting and documentation of patient symptoms, responses, and progress.
• Assume responsibility for professional development, continuing education, and maintaining licensure.
• Perform patient rounds throughout all hospital areas as needed; ensure departmental staffing plans are implemented.
• Serve as a clinical resource to staff; assist in efficient use of staffing and resources to meet patient care needs.
• Provide immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication of incidents to appropriate leadership.
• Respond to emergency situations and assist as necessary.
• Act as a resource in identifying and solving administrative/operational problems; coordinate with external departments as needed.
• Ensure adherence to hospital and nursing philosophy, policies, and procedures; report significant incidents to administrator-on-call or DON/Nurse Manager.
• Provide ongoing feedback to staff on performance in collaboration with DON/Nurse Manager; assist with performance evaluations and continuing education needs.
• Provide education, remediation, and skills competency assessment as directed.
• Monitor documentation for regulatory compliance and adherence to rules; ensure environment of care requirements are met.
• Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care; initiate crisis intervention as needed.
• Provide patient and family education on identified learning needs; facilitate significant other education.
• Demonstrate knowledge of psychiatric disorders and implement individualized nursing interventions to promote wellness and recovery.
• Provide structure and maintain a therapeutic milieu in collaboration with patients and healthcare providers.
• Administer medications safely; educate patients on prescribed medications; recognize signs of adverse drug reactions.
• Review, revise, and update medical records within facility guidelines and timeframes; transcribe and implement physician orders.
• Document care, progress, and responses accurately and concisely; follow up on client care responsibilities and communicate incomplete assignments to ensure continuity of care.

Requirements

• Minimum Associates Degree in Nursing.
• Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the resident working state.
• Minimum of 3 years Registered Nursing experience.
• Psychiatric nursing experience required.
• Ability to handle high-stress situations and assess potential for patient escalation.
• Strong oral and written communication skills; highly organized with sensitivity to culturally diverse and special needs populations.
• Critical thinking abilities applied to continuous improvement of patient care.
• Self-confidence and conceptual thinking in leading and directing others.
• Professionalism in handling difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others.
• Must successfully complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.

Work Environment

Subject to frequent interruptions and high-paced, stressful conditions. May involve disagreeable odors, sights, or unpredictable patient behavior. Requires spending approximately 90% or more of time inside a building offering protection from weather but not necessarily temperature control.
