Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Hematology Oncology

University Medical Associates (UMA) is seeking a full-time Advanced Practice Provider to join a busy and thriving Hematology Oncology Division, focusing on the care of patients with malignant hematology conditions in an inpatient setting.

About the Role

This salaried, exempt position involves weekday day shifts, weekend day shifts, and holidays, with a schedule of up to 2 weekends (4 shifts) in a 4-week period. The role requires 40 scheduled weekly hours and involves direct patient care for an inpatient population aged 13 years to death.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care, including taking comprehensive histories and performing physical examinations.
• Evaluates and treats patients based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results.
• Performs therapeutic procedures such as bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures, as approved by the Clinical Division Chief.
• Initiates referrals to other healthcare providers and consults with the attending or collaborating physician.
• Documents and bills for direct care provided.
• Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
• Participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
• Supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
• Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
• Precepts students enrolled as advanced practice provider students and facilitates the learning of new team members.
• Maintains licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, and other requirements as per applicable policies and state law.
• Leads the discharge planning process for both Consult (non-teaching) and Malignant Hematology (IM teaching) services.

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant, or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN.
• Preferred APRN training: AGACNP/ACNP (Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner) for managing acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable, or technologically dependent patients.
• Preferred experience: Prior malignant hematology experience.
• All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
• If applicable, DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to the first day.

Physical Requirements

• Continuous standing, walking, and sitting; ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, and reach in all directions.
• Full use of both hands and legs, good finger dexterity, and ability to perform repetitive motions.
• Ability to be physically qualified for respirator use.
• Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects at close and far distances, and work indoors in a latex-safe environment.
• Frequently lift, lower, push, pull, and/or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted; exert up to 50 lbs of force; lift from 36" to overhead up to 25 lbs.
• Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week, consisting of weekday day shifts, weekend day shifts, and holidays. Up to 2 weekends (4 shifts) in a 4-week period.
