About the Role

The Nurse Practitioner will provide appropriate gastroenterology patient care in collaboration with supervising and collaborating physicians. Responsibilities include assessing and managing patients in both clinic and inpatient settings according to established standards and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide first point of medical triage for patients in the hospital setting, including:
    • New inpatient consults
    • Inpatient follow-up visits
    • Weekend call coverage (as negotiated)
  • Provide care in the following settings:
    • Routine follow-up visits in the office
    • Urgent follow-up visits in the office
    • Urgent and provider-requested consults and new patient visits
    • G-tube changes
    • Hemorrhoid banding (after training)
    • Large volume paracentesis (as permitted)
  • Perform daily rounds on hospitalized patients, including specialized populations (e.g., Hep C).
  • Communicate patient care activities to the physician (e.g., visit notes, test results).
  • Participate in clinical continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Interpret and integrate data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Perform physical exams and record findings.
  • Collaborate with physicians in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patients.
  • Order appropriate medications, laboratory, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Administer medications and injections.
  • Interview and advise patients regarding health and illness prevention.
  • Recommend community resources to meet patient and family needs.
  • Provide patient education and instruct patients/families on medications and treatment instructions.
  • Maintain and review patient records, charts, and pertinent information.
  • Triage patient telephone calls and provide consultation.
  • Provide monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits.
  • Adopt the One GI culture of respect, integrity, and accountability to promote teamwork and a positive brand image.
  • Comply with One GI procedures, policies, and regulations relevant to the role.
  • Complete all One GI training requirements (e.g., OSHA, HIPAA, HealthStream, compliance).
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and guidelines, including OSHA, HIPAA, and Federal Fraud and Abuse laws.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nursing license and degree level required by each state to obtain NP license.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and board-certified with prescriptive authority.
  • Successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner program with certification by a national Nurse Practitioner certification board.
  • Three (3) years of professional nursing experience in a clinic or hospital setting.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and knowledge of billing services.
  • Understanding of the responsibilities within the physician/NP/patient relationship.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to speak, hear, understand, and follow written English instructions.
  • Continuous activity levels involving walking, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, and reaching.
  • Dexterity in motion and flexibility.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull 35+ pounds.
  • Must be able to differentiate colors and pass color blind screening.

Work Environment

  • Operates in clinic and hospital environments.
  • Potential exposure to blood, tissue, bodily fluids, Glutaraldehyde/Rapicide, communicable diseases, and biohazards.
