Nurse Practitioner
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Nurse Practitioner to join our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) team to cover maternity leave. This role offers the opportunity to work autonomously within an acute setting, delivering high-quality, patient-centered care using established clinical pathways and guidelines.
Main Duties of the Job
- Independently assess, take history, and perform clinical examinations for patients presenting with acute and varied conditions
- Work within established clinical pathways and protocols to guide clinical decision-making
- Order and interpret appropriate investigations in line with pathway-based care
- Formulate and implement safe, evidence-based management plans
- Escalate and discuss complex cases with senior clinicians or specialty teams when indicated
- Prescribe medications safely and appropriately in line with diagnosis and agreed treatment pathways
- Recognize and respond to clinical deterioration appropriately
- Facilitate safe discharge or admission in line with clinical pathways
- Complete clear and comprehensive discharge documentation, including diagnosis, investigations, and management plans
- Coordinate outpatient investigations, ensuring timely follow-up, review of results, and appropriate action
- Communicate effectively with GPs and specialty teams, ensuring continuity of care and clear management plans
- Demonstrate strong time management and prioritization skills, managing patient flow and acutely unwell patients effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Actively participate in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement initiatives when opportunities arise
- Support ward sisters and the wider nursing/medical team, contributing to safe and effective patient care

Job Purpose
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust defines a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse whose primary purpose of the role is to perform a specific technological procedure/s e.g. endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and/or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a broad patient group e.g. H@N, pre-assessment. To deliver a quality of service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice: To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care.
Person Specification
- Qualifications & Education:
- Essential criteria: Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch), Current NMC registration, Degree/Masters level study, or equivalent specialist study / experience
- Desirable criteria: Master’s degree, Management experience / qualification
- Knowledge & Experience:
- Essential criteria: Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for mentorship if relevant to role, Evidence of on-going continuous professional development, Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context, Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding, Recent experience of extended clinical practice in a senior role underpinned by training and assessment, e.g. venepuncture, cannulation skills and intravenous drug administration, Audit / research experience
- Skills & Abilities:
- Essential criteria: Good IT skills, Able to work independently and across disciplines as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, Effective organization and time management skills, Current driving licence if relevant to role, Moving and handling patients and objects in line with Trust guidelines using appropriate aids
