About the Role

The Nurse Practitioner Acute Care (NP-AC) at Houston Methodist functions as a licensed registered nurse and care provider, delivering comprehensive patient care including diagnosis, treatment, and consultation. This role operates in both inpatient and outpatient settings, adhering to the Texas Nurse Practice Act and collaborating within a treatment team. The NP-AC models compassionate communication, educates patients on preventive care and prescribed treatments, conducts physicals, orders tests, and prescribes medications as appropriate.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate leadership as a clinical resource, interprofessional consultant, and patient advocate.
• Identify staff development opportunities and provide coaching for professional growth.
• Communicate organizational and clinical practice information respectfully and positively.
• Advocate for balanced workloads, positive behaviors, and peer-to-peer accountability.
• Collaborate with the interprofessional healthcare team to manage and coordinate patient care.
• Coordinate timely patient care under physician supervision, focusing on expected outcomes.
• Prioritize care based on patient needs, abilities, and preferences.
• Attend and participate in interprofessional rounds as appropriate.
• Drive improvement in patient satisfaction through adherence to service standards.
• Function as a quality care provider, coordinating and promoting patient health.
• Assist in developing and implementing protocols to ensure patient safety.
• Conduct health assessments (initial, ongoing, discharge) and develop care plans.
• Perform invasive, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures based on licensure and privileges.
• Lead and initiate outcome, quality, and safety improvement activities.
• Implement department strategies to achieve financial targets through efficient care delivery.
• Promote quality healthcare through integration of current research into practice.
• Identify opportunities for practice changes and performance improvement.
• Provide education and serve as a clinical resource for staff development.

Requirements

• Master's degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing.
• Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioners program.
• Two years of registered nurse, advanced practice, or nurse practitioner clinical experience.

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) - Texas State Licensure (Texas Board of Nursing).
• PSV Compact Licensure (must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency).
• APRN Acute Care state license.
• ANCC-recognized Acute-Care practitioner certification (Magnet).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) or Instructor (AHA).
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Instructor (AHA).
• Prescriptive Authority (AP) - Texas Board of Nursing.
• DEA - Narcotics License (Drug Enforcement Administration).
