About the role
The Indian Health Service (IHS) seeks dedicated Registered Nurses to provide comprehensive, evidence-based, and patient-centered care in an ambulatory setting. Our nurses play a vital role in improving the health of American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
Responsibilities
- Deliver compassionate care to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Implement evidence-based, patient-centered nursing care.
- Select appropriate guidelines to match changing patient conditions.
- Administer medications and treatments, and document patient responses and condition changes.
- Communicate patient status and needs to providers and other staff.
- Counsel and teach patients within established protocols.
- Coordinate patient care activities with the care team and use common outpatient clinic equipment.
- Develop and implement plans of care with the care team based on clinical practice guidelines.
- Maintain accurate and complete electronic health record documentation.
- Provide guidance, training, and mentoring to clinical and non-clinical staff.
- Participate in designing and improving clinical care delivery systems through data collection and evaluation.
Requirements
Conditions of employment include U.S. Citizenship and a selective service registration. This is a competitive vacancy announcement under Direct Hire Authority. The position requires a federal background investigation and successful completion of the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
Qualifications
- A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required.
- Licensure as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States is required.
- Experience in outpatient nursing duties, including triage, patient assessment, and implementing provider/clinic standing orders.
- Experience administering medications/treatments, recognizing adverse signs/symptoms, initiating appropriate interventions, and evaluating outcomes to modify the care plan.
- Experience developing and implementing plans of care with the care team based on clinical practice guidelines.
- Experience coordinating referrals/consults and outside services, providing patient/family counseling and education on preventive, curative, and rehabilitative measures.
- Experience participating in designing and improving clinical care delivery systems through data collection/evaluation, performance improvement (PDSA), infection prevention/control activities, and LEAN/process improvement efforts.
