Nurse Manager (RN) - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Maine Medical Center is the state’s largest medical center, licensed for 700 beds and employing more than 9,600 people. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 51-bed, Level III-IV unit and the largest in the State of Maine. Located in the MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center, we provide single rooms with state-of-the-art equipment and work closely with all disciplines including surgical, cardiac, GI, genetics, renal, and palliative care. The unit operates 24/7 with coverage from Neonatologists, Advanced Practice Providers, Nurses, Nursing Support, a Critical Care Transport Team, and a nurse-driven PICC Team. This position participates in shared leadership on-call coverage, including overnights, weekends, and holidays.
About the Role
The Nurse Manager, in collaboration with the Nursing Director, serves as the vital link between the mission and vision of Maine Medical Center and the delivery of safe, patient- and family-centered care that is compassionate, evidence-based, and of the highest quality. Reporting through the Nursing Director, this role requires collaboration with staff, physicians, directors, other professional colleagues, and occasionally senior administration to meet the diverse and continually changing challenges of the healthcare environment. The Nurse Manager must be a creative, autonomous, future-oriented leader who applies nursing expertise, critical thinking, and effective leadership and management skills to ensure quality care is provided through satisfied and inspired professionals.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations of the NICU, ensuring safe and high-quality patient care.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, directors, and other healthcare professionals.
- Serve as a resource and mentor for nursing staff, fostering professional growth and development.
- Participate in shared leadership on-call coverage, including overnights, weekends, and holidays.
- Apply critical thinking and analytical skills to make management decisions and recommendations for departmental issues.
- Integrate teaching principles and counseling techniques to direct the growth of unit staff.
- Prioritize and adjust workflow to meet changing unit needs.
Requirements
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maine.
- BSN required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Advanced knowledge and expertise in providing care, typically acquired through two to three years of progressive experience.
- Extensive NICU experience preferred.
- Prior leadership experience strongly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and management skills to address complex problems.
- High level of critical thinking and analytical skills for decision-making.
- Effective communication skills with hospital staff and the community.
- Ability to organize, manage time, and delegate effectively.

Pay
The base pay range for this full-time position is $132,225.60 to $178,880.00 per year. Compensation for part-time positions is determined on a prorated basis consistent with scheduled hours and applicable full-time equivalent (FTE).
