About the role
The Nurse Manager is responsible for planning, implementing, organizing and evaluating policies, practices, and services of the Nursing Department, in collaboration with the Director of Nursing (DON). Supervises nursing staff. Participates in activities related to general operations of unit and department. Supports Hospital's mission to provide the highest quality care by complying with regulatory guidelines, meeting agency standards, and obtaining appropriate certification.
Essential Duties
- Supports Director of Nursing in educating staff and ensuring consistent implementation of departmental programs, policies and procedures.
- Aids Director of Nursing in establishing standards, work methods and work schedules of department employees.
- Provides directions to nursing staff in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care.
- Provides immediate feedback to staff when opportunities for improvement and enhancement of their professional growth and development are observed.
- Performs coaching/disciplinary action as necessary in accordance with CBA and collaboration with HR.
- Maintain adequate staffing levels by scheduling and providing coverage as needed.
- Provides adequate opportunities for staff training and education.
- In conjunction with Director of Nursing, ensure that staff meet mandatory and continuing education requirements.
- Ensures that staff meets in-service requirements.
- Collaborates with the management and other department managers/caregivers in planning for coordinated services to the patients.
- Shares accountability for the clinical practice of nursing in accordance with professional, facility and regulatory standards.
- Participates in assessing staff skill competency.
- Performs all duties of a Registered Professional Nurse.
- Maintains adequate patient care supplies for unit.
- Ensures implementation of interdisciplinary team goals and interventions for the residents.
- Maintains and recommends changes in physical unit environment to ensure a well-organized, safe environment.
- Collaborates with education coordinator to oversee orientation program for new employees and evaluates progress of the new staff assigned to unit.
- Coordinates and supports all patient admissions and discharges for the assigned floor, ensuring compliance with SMH policies and procedures throughout the process.
- Participates in the facility's and department's quality improvement program and conducts chart audits.
- Maintains accurate records of unit staff training and competencies to ensure regulatory compliance.
Requirements
- Formal education required: Bachelors in Nursing required
- Current NYS RN License
- ACLS, PALS and BLS certification required
- Previous Experience Required: Minimum 3 years nursing. Two Years Supervisory/management Experience Required.
- Demonstrated leadership skills.
