About the Role
Responsible for the excellence of nursing care and staff performance by implementing the goals of the hospital and the individual unit. Maintains the day-to-day operational aspects of the unit in conjunction with other units and areas of the hospital.
Responsibilities
General Management
- Demonstrates leadership and commitment to the Hospital Core Values and Mission.
- Provides leadership, training, and support for staff by establishing performance expectations and providing constructive feedback to improve performance.
- Establishes both short and long-term plans to meet department needs and shows foresight in recognizing problems.
- Effectively communicates hospital information, departmental expectations, and goals to all staff through regular staff meetings, memos, and individual communications.
- Implements policies and procedures in a fair and equitable manner.
- Manages conflict resolution and conducts formal personnel counseling when needed.
Operations/Financial
- Manages the financial resources of the department effectively and efficiently.
- Prepares and manages the annual departmental budget, determining needs and communicating reasonable requests to upper management.
- Is fiscally responsible with expenditures and continuously seeks improvements.
Human Resources
- Recruits, interviews, and hires competent candidates who support the Hospital Mission and Core Values.
- Actively works to improve the working environment to aid in staff retention.
- Ensures proper orientation for all new hires.
- Supports and participates in Hospital recognition programs.
- Completes Initial and Annual Performance Appraisals within required time frames.
- Ensures staff completion of mandatory education requirements.
- Ensures staff maintains updated professional licensure and certifications and forwards documents to Human Resources.
- Works with Employee Health to ensure employees adhere to DOH/DNV/Infection Control Regulations.
Staff Development
- Provides ongoing training to staff to ensure productivity and knowledge.
- Ensures employee competency through staff development and continuing education opportunities, including mandated and regulatory programs.
Quality Improvement
- Implements and monitors patient safety initiatives to meet established goals.
- Reviews incident reports and patient complaints, following up appropriately.
- Maintains target levels of customer satisfaction and implements initiatives to improve service.
Essential Job Functions
- Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the unit, ensuring clinical excellence and effective collaboration in the interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrates clinical competence in all aspects of the assigned unit and serves as a role model and clinical resource, especially for new staff.
- Promotes and develops open communication between all staff on all shifts.
- Ensures staffing assignments are patient-centered and based on acuity across all shifts.
- Facilitates excellence in patient care delivery.
- Responsible for EMS Coordinator day-to-day operations and collaborates with the Administrative Director on EMS issues.
- Ensures Nursing processes are applied appropriately and documentation is complete.
- Assists and encourages staff to reach optimum potential, particularly in charge roles, QA/QI, and educational development.
- Maintains a safe physical environment for patients, staff, family, and visitors by ensuring infection control standards are met.
- Collaborates with the Administrative Director in the evaluation, professional development, and discipline of all unit staff.
- Collaborates with the Administrative Director to develop and implement unit-specific goals while adhering to hospital-wide goals, including EMS goals and QA/QI activities. Attends M.A.C. Committee.
- Develops and updates policies and procedures specific to E.D. standards and ensures staff compliance.
- Works with the Medical Director to coordinate E.D. management meetings and attends the Acute Care Committee.
- Oversees the unit schedule to ensure adequate staffing patterns for unit needs.
- Assists in recruitment, interviewing, and selection of staff for the unit and oversees their preceptorship.
- Performs any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing; pursuing or has achieved B.S.N.
- ACLS certified.
- 3-5 years of critical care background; experience in Q.A. and patient care management.
- CEN preferred.
- Current NYS Registered Nurse license.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development, standards of excellence as a nursing practitioner, and leadership qualities.
- BLS Certification.
