Nurse Manager - CVICU

At Houston Methodist, this registered nurse position is responsible for 24-hour comprehensive operational oversight of patient care delivery and quality in designated areas, fostering interdepartmental and interprofessional collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in committees, representing the unit and Nursing positively.
  • Develops and implements performance initiatives to ensure optimal patient safety, outcomes, and customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates leadership through self-direction, initiative, and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Manages daily work activities of unit/department staff, ensuring quality, productivity, and efficiency while supporting strategic and operational objectives.
  • Provides guidance on staffing, budget compliance, hiring, termination, coaching, and counseling on performance.
  • Assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures for a safe and effective work environment.
  • Implements training, monitoring, and operational initiatives to ensure compliance with ethical, legal, and regulatory standards.

People

  • Performs management responsibilities including selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of department staff.
  • Provides development and mentoring to staff, aiming to meet or exceed department turnover goals.
  • Conducts regular department meetings, rounds, performance appraisals, new hire feedback, coaching, and recognition to maintain an engaged workforce.
  • Facilitates team dynamics and teambuilding within and between departments, leading process improvements as needed.
  • Meets or exceeds department/system metrics on employee engagement indicators.
  • Establishes two-way communication with staff, demonstrating active listening and supporting organizational goals.

Service

  • Plans and organizes day-to-day operations, setting priorities to ensure high customer/patient satisfaction.
  • Drives department service standards to impact patient/customer satisfaction scores.
  • Actively participates in entity committees as a department representative.
  • Serves as a role model, reinforcing service orientation and resolving concerns or conflicts effectively.
  • Maintains ongoing interactions with patients, families, physicians, and staff to improve care and service.

Quality/Safety

  • Ensures a safe and effective working environment, monitoring and revising the department safety plan and infection control guidelines.
  • Monitors and confirms staff maintain required credentials and competencies.
  • Uses information systems to enhance operations and support performance improvement.
  • Employs a proactive approach to safe outcomes, reporting near misses/adverse events and identifying solutions.
  • Monitors compliance with policies, procedures, and HR standards, taking action on non-compliance.
  • Prepares measurable goals and objectives aligned with Houston Methodist priorities.

Finance

  • Assists in developing and managing the department budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.
  • Manages department expenses within approved budget parameters to meet revenue/expense targets.
  • Develops staffing plans and schedules to meet patient care needs while optimizing productivity and minimizing overtime.
  • Plans unit coverage to maximize management and staff presence.

Growth/Innovation

  • Identifies and implements innovative solutions for workflow improvements through unit projects and shared governance activities.
  • Supports change initiatives and adapts effectively to new work structures or processes.
  • Proactively evaluates processes, recommends changes, and ensures sustainable implementation.
  • Participates in developing and revising procedures.
  • Builds strategic relationships to achieve business goals.
  • Identifies developmental needs for self and staff, completing individual development plans (IDPs).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing.
  • Three years of nursing experience, with one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare (for internal candidates, two years of nursing experience with demonstrated leadership abilities).

Qualifications

  • Required:
    • RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure (Texas Board of Nursing).
    • PSV Compact Licensure - Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
    • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
    • Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification (ANCC).
  • Preferred:
    • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
    • NIHSTROKE - National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) (as required by department).
    • NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) (as required by department).

  • Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary for safe job performance, verified through ongoing assessments and evaluations.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, especially those impacting safety.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers in a customer-focused manner.

  • Adapts interpersonal styles to gain acceptance of ideas or plans, modifying behavior to accommodate tasks and situations.
  • Exhibits leadership, critical thinking, self-direction, initiative, and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Identifies and understands issues, comparing data to draw conclusions and take consistent action.
  • Works effectively in a fast-paced environment with flexibility and adaptability.
  • Demonstrates problem-solving skills, including investigation, cause identification, and corrective action development.

Supplemental Requirements

  • Work Attire: Scrubs or business professional (department-approved).
  • On-Call: Required during emergencies (e.g., disasters, severe weather).
  • Travel: May be required within the Houston Metropolitan area.
