About the Role

The Nurse Manager (NM) functions as the first-line administrative nursing leader, with 24-hour accountability for care delivery including budget of a nursing unit(s). The Nurse Manager must be able to navigate proficiently within the EHR and clinically assist with patient care, functioning in the charge role if indicated. The Nurse Manager coordinates, elevates, and resolves problems and conflicts as they occur.

With support from Charge Nurses and Educators, the Nurse Manager directly supervises clinical nursing and ancillary nursing personnel assigned to a unit or care delivery site. He/she ensures the effective daily operation of the nursing unit on a 24-7 basis by monitoring all activities necessary to provide consistent high-quality patient care, including staffing, equipment, supplies, and services.

The Nurse Manager coordinates nursing staff activities, ensuring stat orders, treatments, plans of care, and clinical pathways are carried out consistently. They have knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulations governing nursing practice and exercise sound, independent judgment in adapting and applying leadership and clinical principles.

The Nurse Manager assists in advancing the professional practice environment by communicating the NGHS nursing strategic direction and focusing on activities that support it. They provide nursing involvement support for VOICE and NDNQI quality teams, including coaching team members in professional participation, and assist with overall clinical governance and other assigned projects.

Responsibilities

  • Actively monitor the quality of care delivered on their unit(s), including performance improvement programming, clinical metrics, and risk management activities related to clinical care and departmental operations.
  • Create a “Customer-Centric” customer service program, rounding on the unit and working with Charge Nurses to address patient/family/physician concerns.
  • Assess, coach, and evaluate staff’s level of clinical practice, ensuring nurses are current in competency, assessments, licensure, certifications, and annual training.
  • Routinely interact with physician customers and support nursing staff in maintaining effective, positive interactions with physicians.
  • Coordinate activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees.
  • Maintain regular communication with all levels of nursing staff to identify strengths, development needs, and business challenges.
  • Support and promote a professional practice model encouraging staff participation in developing clinical standards collaboratively and collegially using best practice research.
  • Oversee personnel actions including hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations, and related activities.
  • Collaborate with leadership to determine fiscal requirements, prepare budgetary recommendations, and monitor resource utilization for labor and supplies.
  • Develop annual strategic goals and objectives to ensure resource efficiency, improve patient satisfaction, and deliver quality patient care.
  • Review quality and performance reports, research variances, and develop action plans to meet clinical and financial goals.
  • Maintain required unit records, reports, and statistics for administrative purposes, ensuring compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
  • Provide progressive discipline to employees when indicated, in accordance with organizational policies.
  • May provide direct patient care, including assessing, planning, and evaluating patients.
  • Conduct daily unit rounds to obtain feedback on clinical services, address customer service issues, engage with physicians and staff, monitor performance/competency, and assess staffing plan effectiveness.
  • Successfully complete mentoring class and assist with mentoring Registered Nurses.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice as an RN in Georgia.
  • Professional certification in either a clinical or leadership specialty within two (2) years of hire.
  • A degree in Nursing (either BSN or MSN).
  • Three (3) to five (5) years as an RN, preferably in an acute care setting.
  • One (1) year of direct supervision of healthcare delivery if combined with leadership experience outside of nursing.
  • Professional organization membership within one month of hire into the role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree (Nursing or other if possessing a BSN) within five (5) years of hire.
  • Two (2) years of nursing leadership experience.

  • Ability to provide consultation to staff, patients, and the public.
  • Ability to direct the training of professional and nonprofessional personnel.
  • Ability to understand and maintain financial records and prepare staff and budget reports.
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Ability to give oral and written instruction in exact detail.
