About the role

The Nurse Extern opportunity is for December 2026 graduates at Aurora St. Luke's. This is a 6 times Magnet designated facility with 10 T being a 24-bed unit caring for advanced heart failure, chest pain, pre-open heart surgery, pulmonary hypertension, and overflow patients. The role involves working 8 hours a week starting in July/August 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Completes activities of daily living, vital sign completion, and blood glucose monitoring under the observation of the Registered Nurse.
  • Collaborates with the Registered Nurse to establish a plan of care based on patient needs and preferences.
  • Evaluates patient responses to interventions and communicates observations to the Registered Nurse.
  • Develops delegation skills for Health Unit Coordinators, Nursing Assistants, and technical roles on the unit.
  • Administers medication as delegated by the Registered Nurse.
  • Manages an increased number of patients and incorporates time management principles into the shift routine.
  • Demonstrates clinical judgment and proficiency in managing emergencies and performing patient positioning and transporting duties.
  • Adapts to interruptions and changing priorities/workload.
  • Ensures compliance with safety protocols and maintains a safe environment for patients and staff.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved nursing program.
  • Successfully completed a Medical Surgical Course that includes pharmacological concepts.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities/workload.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks requiring lifting, pushing/pulling, and transferring patients.
  • Functional vision and hearing.

  • Age-appropriate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Pay

$21.85 - $32.80 per hour
