Duties & Responsibilities
Purpose of Position: Under direction, implements, monitors, evaluates, and participates in the development of nursing educational programs, including nursing orientation programs, and other developmental activities in an assigned health care setting.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities:
- Coordinates nursing educational programs and activities for an assigned health care setting; provides continuous education and training to nursing staff; and assesses educational needs of staff.
- Participates in planning and conducting nursing staff development programs.
- Plans, organizes, coordinates and evaluates in-service nursing orientation; maintains a system of records of in-service orientation, staff development, and educational activities; and monitors and submits all other mandatory work and regulatory reports.
- Identifies and collects information related to learning needs and collaborates with members of multiple disciplines in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of effective nursing education and training programs; serves as a resource for all nursing educational inquiries and issues.
- Conducts program evaluations that measure learning impact and outcomes against strategic goals and objectives of the health care setting to enhance the effectiveness of clinical care and employee performance.
- Assesses learners’ progress, and interprets appropriate information necessary to revise and/or adjust orientation, competencies, lesson plans, educational activities and teaching techniques, as needed.
- Contributes to competency assessment by monitoring nursing staff's knowledge and compliance, to ensure that national Patient Safety Goals are maintained, and by participating in competency validation of newly-appointed staff; maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education programs, activities, and other appropriate learning opportunities.
- Serves on nursing and health care setting committees, as assigned, and develops and directs continuous quality improvement programs which achieve targeted patient quality of care outcomes.
- Instructs and provides in-service education for new products, equipment, and changes or updates to nursing departmental orientation procedures.
- Identifies and implements nursing evidence-based methodologies and/or best practices; develops programs based on the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards.
- Develops teaching and learning strategies and methodologies to promote participant engagement.
Minimum Qualifications
- A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State;
- Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA);
- A Master’s Degree in Nursing, or a related nursing or education field, from an accredited college or university;
- Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse in specialty area(s), including: One (1) year providing nursing education and training in specialty area(s); or
- Holds a valid and current certification as a Nurse Educator.
Department Preferences
While this position functions as a General Nurse Educator (Nurse Educator Level II), strong consideration will be given to candidates with specialized clinical backgrounds.
Preferred Clinical Experience
- Minimum of 3–5 years of recent clinical experience in high-acuity specialty areas, specifically the Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), or Critical Care Services.
Education & Professional Strengths
- Demonstrated background in designing, facilitating, and evaluating general nursing orientation, competency assessments, and continuing education programs.
- Strong expertise in applying critical care principles, emergency response protocols, and advanced clinical skill validation to general nursing populations.
- Proven ability to mentor, precept, and educate nursing staff across diverse clinical units.
