Nuclear Medicine Technologist I or II - Galveston (M-F 8a-5p)

About the role

This is an open-pooled position. Applicants’ education and experience will be considered, and the position may be filled at a lower or higher level as appropriate.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Minimum Requirements

• Education: Associate of Applied Science or graduate of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology program
• Experience:
  • Nuclear Medicine Technologist I: 0+ years
  • Nuclear Medicine Technologist II: 3 years
• Licenses, Registrations or Certifications:
  • American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT-N) or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT)
  • Texas Medical Board certification (MRT)
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • For CT contrast administration (Nuclear Medicine Technologist II only): ARRT-CT or NMTCB-CT

Responsibilities

• Perform routine to complex diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures
• Assist physicians during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including sterile technique
• Optimize protocols to improve patient care, image quality, and patient experience (positioning, physiology, preparation, technical factors)
• Practice radiation safety and ALARA principles
• Maintain proper sterile techniques and comply with safety standards
• Perform hot lab and imaging equipment quality control at required frequencies; report malfunctions and call for service as needed
• Use critical thinking to observe and address patient reactions or potential outcomes
• Provide accurate and complete documentation; enter charges at time of service
• Participate in department projects, shared governance, and continual learning beyond baseline competencies
• Nuclear Medicine Technologist II only: Serve as mentor and trainer to Nuclear Medicine Technologist I and students

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Demonstrated skills and competencies necessary to safely perform assigned job duties
• Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English sufficient for patient and employee safety
• Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers using positive language
• Basic computer proficiency; ability to operate Hospital/Radiology Information Systems and office software
• Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills; commitment to excellent customer service
• Ability to adapt to multiple priorities with minimal supervision; organize workflow and participate in problem-solving
• Nuclear Medicine Technologist II only: Ability to work independently, handle challenging diagnostic procedures, and demonstrate sound judgment

Working Environment & Equipment

• Work attire: scrubs
• Equipment used:
  • Nuclear Medicine/PET units and hot lab equipment from various vendors
  • Electronic Health Record
  • PACS
• May travel to other UTMB campuses
• Required participation in call, weekend, holiday, and disaster team rotations
• Occupational hazards include communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, hazardous medications, and combative patients
• Physical demands:
  • Push or pull a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Walk long distances
  • Stand continuously for up to 60 minutes at a time
