Where You’ll Work

The Y12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN, plays a vital role in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Nuclear Security Enterprise. Y-12 provides expertise in nuclear technology and materials, security and consequence management, and manufacturing and technical services. It supports projects for federal agencies, including the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security, and contributes to national security initiatives such as radiological emergency training and advanced manufacturing platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical capabilities in Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) to ensure fissile materials are processed, stored, transferred, and handled safely to protect personnel and property from nuclear criticality accidents.
  • Perform analysis of equipment, processes, and procedures to prescribe correct methods, control requirements, and limitations.
  • Conduct surveillances, inspections, walkthroughs, appraisals, or audits of fissile material operations to ensure compliance with approvals.
  • Provide operating areas with specific NCS professional interpretations and advice.
  • Train employees in basic Nuclear Criticality Safety.
  • Validate, maintain, and operate nuclear computer codes and nuclear cross-sections.
  • Apply DOE rules, guides, orders, standards, and handbooks, including 10CFR 830, Nuclear Safety Management.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering-related field plus 20 years of direct experience with 10 years of DOE-specific experience, or an MA or MS Degree plus 18 years of direct experience with 10 years of DOE-specific experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Security Clearance.
  • Successful background check and drug screening.

Schedule

This is a part-time position requiring 15 to 30 hours per week, based on project needs.
