Northeast Animal Shelter - Animal Welfare Specialist

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity at our Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, MA for an Animal Welfare Specialist. Animal Welfare Specialists (AWS) are at the forefront of the MSPCA's mission, working directly with people and their pets to effect positive change in our community.

Responsibilities

• Working hands-on with several species of animals, including feeding, cleaning and disinfecting animal living spaces, providing enrichment activities, exercising, and medication administration.
• Facilitating adoptions by matchmaking animals with prospective adopters using a conversation-based approach to identify the best possible outcome for both the person and the animal.
• Assisting in the surrender of an animal in an empathetic and compassionate manner that is free from judgment.

Requirements

• At least one year of experience in a customer service/client care position.
• Previous work or volunteer experience with animals is a plus.
• Excellent judgment and interpersonal skills.
• Eagerness to work in support of the human-animal bond.
• Proficiency in Spanish is strongly encouraged.

The MSPCA is the largest animal welfare organization in New England, caring for and placing over 12,000 animals annually across our four adoption centers and providing care for over 14,000 animals in our community clinics. At our adoption centers, we aim to help the greatest number of animals by upholding an open adoption philosophy and moving pets through the shelter effectively while maintaining a commitment to socially conscious sheltering. For our community clinics, we work to provide access to low-cost veterinary care that helps keep families together with their pets.

Schedule

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position with required weekend days.
