Specialist Animal Welfare

Ensure animals entrusted to Tyson Foods are handled safely and humanely through effective training, communication, observation, and animal welfare audits at live production facilities for beef or pork species. This role covers both the Newbern (TN) and Williams (Union City, TN) facilities, requiring weekly travel between locations.

Responsibilities

• Conduct animal welfare, handling, regulatory, biosecurity, process evaluation, and certification audits for live production facilities, including transportation and handling audits.
• Scope of audits spans from when Tyson takes ownership of the animal through processing.
• Ensure compliance with all company and governmental standards.
• Perform unannounced audits outside normal day shifts at various live production facilities or where animals are present.
• Implement programs and perform record reviews of audits in the Safety Chain system.
• Analyze internal animal welfare audit data for trends, identify risks and opportunities, and collaborate with business leaders to implement improvements.
• Track and trend FSIS regulatory activity (MOI, NR, etc.) and distribute reports to management.
• Ensure implementation of audit recommendations and create/distribute weekly reports to management.
• Assist in developing animal welfare and handling training materials.
• Deliver animal welfare and handling training for Tyson team members and contract personnel who have contact with live production facilities or plant areas.
• Maintain training database and ensure training is completed and understood.
• Provide technical support and assistance with Tyson's CARE and Farm Check programs.
• Manage and assist in executing external supplier/customer audit requests.
• Collaborate with various departments and maintain strong partnerships across the company.
• Handle confidential information, including company processes and training programs.
• Complete and manage special projects to meet business needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in live animal production and/or processing; meat (beef/pork) plant operations experience a plus.
• Previous experience with a third-party animal welfare auditing company preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); Safety Chain system and NR Database experience a plus.
• Experience with data analysis and reporting.
• Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organization (PAACO) certification or eligibility and commitment to obtain it.
• Thorough knowledge of live production, biosecurity, food safety, and animal welfare and handling standards.
• Exceptional attention to detail, follow-up, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work around animals, live production, and processing plant environments.
• Occasional overnight travel and night work required; ability to travel 4-6 times per year.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and withstand varied temperature and climate changes.
• Must reside in the United States; sponsorship not available.
• Frequent standing and walking; ability to spend extended periods on feet, move safely across environments, and occasionally bend, lift, or reach.

Preference given to internal candidates currently employed at this facility, followed by candidates from other Tyson facilities, then external candidates.
