North Dakota Parks and Recreation Seasonal Trail Maintenance

About the role

North Dakota Parks and Recreation is seeking two dependable seasonal trail maintenance workers to help maintain motorized and non-motorized trail systems in northeast North Dakota and other assigned trail locations. This is a hands-on outdoor position for someone who enjoys actively working in nature, takes pride in maintaining public trails, and can work safely with limited on-site supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Perform seasonal maintenance on motorized and non-motorized trail systems.
  • Mow, trim, clear brush, remove debris, and maintain trail corridors.
  • Auxiliary with trail surface repair, grading, resurfacing, erosion control, and drainage work.
  • Auxiliary with installation, repair, and maintenance of trail signage, markers, and related trail features.
  • Operate assigned vehicles, mowers, UTVs/ATVs, trailers, small engine tools, or other trail maintenance equipment as trained and authorized.
  • Load, haul, place, spread, and compact materials as assigned.
  • Conduct basic equipment checks, cleaning, greasing, fluid checks, and report maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Perform other related seasonal trail maintenance duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to perform outdoor physical labor in varying weather and trail conditions.
  • Ability to work independently with remote supervision.
  • Ability to communicate regularly and reliably with an off-site supervisor regarding work progress, weather impacts, trail conditions, equipment needs, and safety concerns.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to travel to assigned work locations; limited overnight travel may be required.
  • Ability to safely operate or learn to operate assigned tools and equipment, subject to training, supervisor approval, and applicable federal and state labor laws.
  • Ability to work on a flexible, weather-dependent schedule with no guarantee of weekly hours.

Qualifications

  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following areas: Trail maintenance, park maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, farming/ranching, construction, road maintenance, or similar outdoor work.
  • Operating equipment such as mowers, tractors, skid steers, UTVs/ATVs, trailers, or similar equipment.
  • Safely hauling trailers or transporting equipment.
  • Basic equipment maintenance, mechanical aptitude, or small engine maintenance.
  • Working independently in outdoor settings.
