Nonprofit Human Services Underwriting Specialist

About the role

Average annual base salary range: $90,000 - $130,000 depending on experience, qualifications, and geographic location.

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, along with 5+ years of underwriting experience in commercial lines, particularly in nonprofit human services and education.

Responsibilities

• Analyze, select, and price business with prescriptive terms and conditions of coverage.
• Examine inspection reports, locations, risks, financials, and other available tools to identify new or unresolved concerns.
• Communicate with Risk Control for inspections, follow-ups, and service needs for insureds.
• Drive corrective action or remediation strategies on renewal accounts.
• Underwrite renewals referred by the underwriting assistant as well as renewals over $35,000, working to achieve required rate change goals.
• Escalate referrals, in a timely manner, on accounts needing additional review or approval by higher-level underwriters.
• Adhere to service expectations and regulatory compliance by timely release of renewals, non-renewals, and conditional notices.
• Accountable for achieving key performance indicators of the portfolio, including developing and furthering successful relationships with distribution partners.
• Drive agency relationships through daily interactions and in-person visits throughout the year; collaborate with the distribution team on cultivating agency relationships and new business opportunities.
• Cultivate a high-performing culture by providing superior customer service and business acumen, mentoring support staff, conducting peer audits, assisting in the training of new hires and internal promotions, and reviewing, mentoring, and approving referrals for lower authority level associates.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
• 5+ years of underwriting experience in commercial lines, particularly in nonprofit human services and education.
• Excellent communication skills, both in writing and verbal.
• Ability to analyze and make decisions in a timely manner.
