Responsibilities
- Prepare compounded products according to prescription orders under the supervision of a pharmacist.
- Select the appropriate containers in which to dispense or store compounded medications according to the type of medication and requirements of the program.
- Calculate and measure ingredients accurately to ensure correct concentration and dosages.
- Exercise impeccable organization skills.
- Maintain a clean and professional environment.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow approved compounding techniques in accordance with USP and USP .
- Perform laboratory skills related to compounding medication, such as using an analytical scale, comprehending pharmaceutical calculations, donning/doffing garb, etc.
- Ensure medication quality assurance by performing visual inspections and quality checks on compounded medications to verify integrity, clarity, and absence of particulates.
- Document all compounding activities, including ingredient lot numbers, expiration dates, and compounding procedures.
- Aid in the preparation of batch records, compounding logs, and other documentation required for regulatory compliance.
- Operate and maintain compounding equipment, including filtration devices, automated compounding systems, and air filtration hoods.
- Perform routine maintenance and calibration of equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability in medication preparation.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and collaborate with pharmacy staff or technical support for resolution.
- Monitor and manage inventory levels of compounding supplies, medications, and packaging materials.
- Cook with purchasing and supply chain departments to order supplies and maintain adequate stock levels.
- Rotate stock and conduct periodic inventory audits to prevent expired medications and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Adhere to pharmacy policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines governing non-sterile compounding practices, including USP , USP and state pharmacy laws.
- Participate in continuing education and training programs to stay updated on compounding best practices and regulatory changes.
- Implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance non-sterile compounding processes and patient outcomes.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an Ohio Board of Pharmacy approved pharmacy technician training program. Completion of a non-sterile compounding training program or certification (e.g., Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Non-Sterile Compounding Certificate) is ideal.
- Licensure: Registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as either a Registered Technician or as a Certified Technician.
- Certification: PTCB certification preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience as a pharmacy technician.
- Core competencies include: Hand hygiene, Garbing, Cleaning and sanitizing, Handling and transporting components and CNSPs, Measuring and mixing, Proper use of equipment and devices selected to compound CNSPs, Documentation of the compounding process.
