About the Role

The Coach position is responsible for designing and implementing athletic program activities, including analyzing opposition strategies, strengths, and weaknesses. Coaches provide supervision of student athletes during all aspects of the program, use sound instructional techniques, serve as positive role models, and may act as a liaison between the school, community, and various organizations. This role is assigned to a coaching position at the Middle School level.

Responsibilities

  • Assess student athletes to provide feedback on individual performance and determine team placement.
  • Attend meetings, workshops, and conferences to receive and convey information related to the role.
  • Conduct supporting activities such as parent orientations, recognition events, and banquets to provide program information and recognize participants' accomplishments.
  • Develop game strategies and plans to prepare the team and individual athletes for competition.
  • Create team and individual practice regimes (e.g., strength, speed, agility, nutritional, injury prevention) to enhance performance.
  • Evaluate facilities and playing fields for potential hazards and recommend modifications to reduce injury risk.
  • Guide other coaching personnel in instructional techniques, practice organization, and supervision guidelines.
  • Identify program needs and recommend expenditures for activities, equipment, and supplies to enhance the athletic program.
  • Implement practice schedules and related events to ensure efficient program operation.
  • Instruct student athletes to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintain records such as game statistics, insurance forms, permission slips, emergency information, schedules, and equipment inventories to comply with district, athletic conference, and state requirements.
  • Manage the middle school athletic program to ensure continuity and accountability across all levels.
  • Monitor student athletes' academic eligibility to comply with AIA requirements and provide intervention (e.g., counseling, tutoring) as needed.
  • Oversee assistant coaches, student managers, and volunteers to provide direction and monitor activities.
  • Perform personnel-related functions such as interviewing, assessing, and recommending staff as needed.
  • Complete other related duties to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.
  • Promote the athletic program through off-season clinics, skill camps, and community meetings to increase interest and participation.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, parents, school personnel, media, and college representatives to provide information and assistance.
  • Supervise student athletes during competitions, travel, meetings, and practices to minimize injury risk.
  • Support other athletic program staff to assist in their roles and functions.
  • Analyze opposition strategies before and during athletic events to assess strengths and weaknesses and develop game plans.

Requirements

  • Skills required to perform multiple, technical tasks with occasional need for skill upgrades, including:
    • Adapting to changing work priorities.

  • Knowledge required to perform algebra/geometry, interpret technical information, write technical materials, and analyze situations, including:
    • Equipment used in the activity/program.

    • Pertinent laws, codes, policies, and regulations.
    • Participant eligibility, attendance, and discipline guidelines.
    • Public relations protocols.
    • Relevant professional standards and practices.
    • Safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to:
    • Schedule activities, meetings, and events.
    • Gather, collate, and classify data.
    • Use basic, job-related equipment.
    • Work independently with diverse individuals and groups.
    • Handle frequent interruptions.
    • Exhibit strong leadership and maintain confidentiality.

    • Travel to off-campus athletic events and competitions.
    • Work extended hours, including evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.

Working Environment

The role requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. The job involves 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. Work is performed under some temperature extremes and conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
