Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Travels to donor hospital within one hour of receiving referral information from AOC.
- Conducts thorough physical and medical assessments with information from hospital staff and patient’s medical record.
- Collaboratively works with AOC and/or Medical Director to determine unsuitability for organ donation.
- Initiates standing orders and begins donor evaluation, organ placement, and recovery processes.
- Enters all donor information into EMR and keeps AOC informed of medical status changes.
- Participates in hospital development activities and professional education.
- Accepts on-call responsibilities, prepares for on-call, and responds promptly to hospital referral calls.
- Provides clinical evaluation of potential donors, confirms brain death diagnosis, and obtains necessary information for assessment.
- Determines legal next-of-kin, completes documentation, and coordinates with Coroner for organ and tissue donation.
- Directs clinical management of donors, orders tests, evaluates results, and documents management activity.
- Allocates donated organs and tissues, documents allocation, contacts OR for recovery, and coordinates surgical recovery.
- Assists with organ and tissue recovery, administers preservation solutions, and documents processes.
- Maintains detailed records of donor referrals, discussions, management, allocation, and recovery.
- Maintains current knowledge of recovery policies and procedures, adheres to professional standards, and participates in post-donor reviews.
- Facilitates hospital development activities, assists in comprehensive huddles, and makes presentations on donation.
- Represents SHSC at public displays, provides information to healthcare professionals and the public, and maintains donor charts.
- Informs Coroner’s office upon completion of donation and donor readiness for transport.
- Routinely reviews communication and ensures thorough completion of donor charts and training assignments.
Qualifications
- AS degree acquired through extensive and prolonged training in biological sciences, paramedicine, or allied health.
- Two (2) years of experience in critical care and/or emergency care; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
