About the role

Lowe’s Department Supervisors lead teams in either front-end or back-end/night operations, ensuring operational excellence, associate development, and outstanding customer service. This role also includes Manager-on-Duty (MOD) responsibilities, providing full leadership over the store during assigned shifts.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • Assigns team members to activities, ensuring staff coverage meets customer demands and redeploying when necessary to support needs throughout the department.
  • May participate in interviews and provide input into selection decisions for new associates in assigned area.
  • Connects with the team daily to understand challenges, elevating issues when necessary.
  • Provides open and timely feedback and performance coaching; partners with ASM when formal disciplinary action is needed.
  • Encourages team to share ideas and best practices for delivering outstanding customer service.
  • Empowers others to make decisions while providing guidance when necessary.
  • Provides recognition for accomplishing goals and demonstrating effective behaviors.
  • Fosters an environment of associate growth and development through coaching and regular performance feedback.
  • Identifies and addresses associate relations concerns, escalating to senior management or HR as needed.

Operational Excellence

  • Empowers and coaches team to follow proper processes and achieve operational efficiencies.
  • Monitors and drives team to achievement of key operational performance metrics.
  • Identifies barriers to operational processes or customer experience and implements solutions.
  • Responds quickly to unexpected events (e.g., callouts/no-shows, unscheduled deliveries) by reprioritizing tasks.
  • Monitors safe operation of store power equipment and addresses violations with associates.
  • Maintains focus on safety, security, and shrink prevention, including securing doors/gates and reporting theft.
  • Conducts daily safety reviews, noting hazards and maintaining clean, organized store areas.

Continuous Operational Improvement

  • Recommends strategies to reduce unproductive time, waste, or product loss.
  • Analyzes operational activities to minimize impact on customers.

  • Seeks performance feedback and pursues self-development opportunities.
  • Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with cross-functional partners.
  • Adapts quickly to work challenges and organizational change, setting an example for others.

Front-End Department Supervisor

  • Oversees front-end operational activities (e.g., checkouts, returns, overrides, till audits, PUIS Desk, product staging).
  • Drives excellent customer service by ensuring team greets customers, answers inquiries, and addresses concerns.
  • Allocates appropriate headcount in check-out and administrative areas (e.g., Garden, Pro, Front registers, Customer Service/Returns Desks, PUIS Desk, Money Room).
  • Researches shortages/overages, deposits cash, and handles register pulls/loans.
  • Monitors Customer Service desk activity and supports when needed.
  • Performs payroll closeout process.

Back-End and Night Operations Department Supervisor

  • Oversees back-end operational activities (e.g., receiving/stocking inventory, assembling product, controlling freight flow, area recovery, delivery staging).
  • Ensures back-end operations do not impact the customer experience (e.g., clear floors, stocked items).
  • Drives efficient disbursement of product from receiving to sales departments to replenish shelves/top stock.
  • Ensures products are stocked and fronted according to planograms, moving top stock down as needed.
  • Drives completion of activities supporting an efficient and safe delivery process (e.g., pick and stage product).
  • During overnight shifts, serves as the only key-carrying manager in the building.

Manager-on-Duty (MOD)

  • Provides full leadership over the store, driving engagement, customer service, and operational efficiency.
  • Walks the store to observe customer/associate interactions and provides in-the-moment coaching.
  • Ensures associates are equipped to deliver quality sales and service.
  • Ensures Specialty and Pro areas are properly staffed for customer traffic and sales.
  • Shifts associates to areas of high customer traffic or department hotspots as needed.
  • Manages associate response to call buttons.
  • Validates that aisles remain clean, safe, and free of clutter.
  • Hands off shift observations in-person to the next MOD.
  • Funnels non-MOD activities (e.g., customer complaints, management approvals) to appropriate leaders.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (or equivalent years of experience).
  • 5 years of experience in a retail environment.
  • Experience providing direction or supervision to teams (with or without direct report responsibility).
  • Experience supporting or participating in training, mentoring, and developing associates.
  • Experience working cross-functionally.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain sales-related licensure or registration as required by law.

  • Experience supporting front-end or back-end operations in a retail environment.
  • Experience in a customer service role.
  • Experience in a leadership role with direct report responsibility.
  • Experience in the home improvement retail sector.
  • Experience in a fast-paced, dynamic retail environment.
  • Experience in a key-carrying role with manager-on-duty responsibilities.
  • Experience using store computer systems (e.g., Project Tool, Genesis, Sterling, M2O, Thin Client).
