About the role
The National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University is seeking a Dimensional Metrologist II. This position is located at the Advanced Machining and Prototyping (AMP) lab in Park City, KS.
Responsibilities
- Perform tasks related to metrology measurements and analysis, including research and data collection, to support production.
- Produce accurate and repeatable measurement of parts and tools.
- Prepare inspection plans and schedules inspection tasks.
- Maintain and track metrology equipment and/or automation.
- Write and run advanced programs for metrology equipment.
- Provide reports for inspected parts; assembles First Article Inspection (FAI) reports.
- Provide guidance, direction, and assistance to junior metrology engineers.
- Research new technologies.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent by date of hire
- Five (5) years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- Ability to learn additional functions of metrology, including portable, stationary, and automation.
- Demonstrated advanced understanding of metrology concepts and practices.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of metrology software.
- Ability to work productively with a variety of customers to understand their needs and constraints.
- Ability to work independently or as a member of a team.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail, organize tasks, and to think critically.
- Proficient in using hand gauges such as micrometers, calipers, and bore gages.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Qualifications
- BS in Engineering or related field of study
- Five (5) years Portable Metrology experience; or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
Skills
- Ability to learn additional functions of metrology, including portable, stationary, and automation.
- Demonstrated advanced understanding of metrology concepts and practices.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of metrology software.

Schedule
Typical work schedule: 8am – 5pm Monday – Friday; occasional evenings and weekends may be required as needed. Work is performed onsite and in-person.
