News Intern (6 Months)

Its signature “Best” series includes colleges, graduate schools, hospitals, diets, cars, financial services and more, plus annual Best Colleges and Best Hospitals rankings and U.S. News Live conferences. This internship offers an early‑career journalist a range of experiences at a national digital news outlet, including learning about the brand’s journalism, effective SEO‑focused reporting and writing, and article production in the content management system. The role focuses on contributing to education newsletters, reporting news and rankings‑related stories for the Best Countries and Best States sections, and creating social media video and visual content.

Responsibilities

• Research topics, interviewees, dates and other elements of newsletter content.
• Engage in outreach and interviews for newsletter items.
• Perform fact‑checking and copy editing.
• Assist with launches, such as the Best Countries launch or the Best States launch, if they occur during your tenure.
• Assist with article production through our content management system (CMS).
• Contribute to written coverage for news articles.
• Create and post videos and other content for social media posts.
• Work closely with the data team to strengthen stories and potentially create data visualizations to enhance that work.
• Assist with research or administrative tasks as needed.

Qualifications

• Eligible candidates must be recent college grads, grad students, or part‑time/full‑time students enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited college or university.
• Provide 3 hyperlinked writing samples on your resume or a link to your portfolio.
• Ability to work 37.5 hours/week, Monday‑Friday.
• Must be able to work a hybrid schedule from the Washington, D.C. or New York office.
• Exercise sound judgment, professionalism and maturity in the workplace.
• Experience working in a team and collaborating effectively with others.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Familiarity with Canva and/or other graphic design programs, as well as a range of social media platforms.
• 3.0 GPA or above preferred.
• A passion for the news industry and a demonstrated interest in becoming a journalist.
• A voracious appetite for the news.
• An inquisitive mind.
• Internal motivation and a strong work ethic.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Flexibility and eagerness to take on a variety of entry‑level tasks.

Skills

• Strong social media skills, including creating video content for TikTok and visually compelling posts for Instagram.
• Experience with graphic design (Canva or similar).
• Proficiency with the company’s content management system (CMS) for article production.
• Ability to work with the data team to produce data visualizations.
• Video creation and editing for social media.

Pay

Internship pays $18.40 hourly.

Schedule

Expected schedule: 37.5 hours/week, Monday‑Friday; hybrid schedule required from Washington, D.C. or New York office; internship duration: 6 months.
