New Smoke Detector Installation Program
Manistee, MI — The City of Manistee Fire Department is proud to announce the launch of its Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Installation Program, aimed at improving residential fire safety throughout the community.
About the Program
Through a recently awarded federal grant, the Manistee Fire Department has obtained funding to purchase smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. In addition, the department has received a supplemental supply of detectors through a State of Michigan safety initiative, expanding the program’s reach to serve more residents.
This program is available at no cost to homeowners within the City of Manistee. Trained firefighters will visit the home and install:
- New 10-year battery smoke detectors on every level of the residence, including in each bedroom
- A 10-year sealed battery carbon monoxide detector
In addition to installation, firefighters will provide valuable fire safety education, helping residents better understand how to prevent fires, maintain detectors, and develop effective home escape plans.
Why It Matters
“This program is an important step in protecting our community,” said Fire Chief Thomas Hernden. “Working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors save lives. By removing cost barriers and installing these devices for residents, we are helping ensure every home in Manistee is safer.”
Early detection is critical in preventing injury and loss of life from fire and carbon monoxide exposure. Properly installed and maintained detectors significantly increase the chances of survival by providing early warning in emergency situations.
How to Participate
Eligible homeowners may request installation services by:
