Neurosurgery, Lansing, MI, NP/PA

Provide professional and technical services for the treatment and care of neurosurgery patients.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate appropriate patient admission to hospital beds, including inter- and intra-hospital transfers.
• Perform and dictate History & Physicals, Consultations, Discharge Summaries, and SOAP notes on all patient floors.
• Facilitate appropriate outpatient care, including necessary referrals to outside physicians.
• Assist with development of plan of care based on patient assessment.
• Review x-rays, monitor lab values, and other diagnostic reports.
• Perform daily rounds and chart documentation on all patient floors.
• Respond to all general surgery emergencies.
• Determine need for and perform core specialized diagnostic, therapeutic, and other procedures, including:
  • Initiate and manage cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Take leadership role in all in- and outpatient nursing duties, including outpatient consultation, follow-up exams, and surgical scheduling.
  • Manage outpatient prescriptions for surgical patients.
  • Monitor and adjust medications and dosages.
  • Participate in endoscopy under the direction of the primary surgeon.
  • Take call in accordance with primary covering surgeon.
  • Perform minor procedures such as incision and drainage, evacuation of hematoma, drain removal, Lap Band adjustments, and suturing in inpatient or outpatient settings as needed.
  • Urethral catheterization of the bladder.
  • Peripheral and/or central intravenous catheter insertion.
• Collaborate with the surgeon and other healthcare professionals for optimal surgical outcomes, including:
  • Assisting the anesthesiologist when applicable.
  • Assisting with patient positioning, skin preparation, and draping.
  • Providing wound exposure.
  • Handling and cutting tissue appropriately to reduce potential for injury.
  • Using and manipulating surgical instruments and medical devices skillfully.
  • First assisting surgeon in the operating room and demonstrating proficiency in all aspects as taught by the supervising physician.
  • Providing hemostasis.
  • Suturing tissue and closing wounds.
  • Assisting in the safe delivery of the patient to the recovery room.
  • Communicating with appropriate healthcare personnel and family members.
  • Participating in pre- and postoperative care/teaching and discharge planning with physician supervision.
• Pre-assessment of the patient, including review of lab work.
• Rounding on inpatients, seeing patients in the office, performing and assisting in-office procedures.
• Provide patient/family education from admission to discharge regarding diet, medications, exercise, risk factors, and follow-up visits.
• Facilitate timely patient discharge.
• Communicate daily with the healthcare team.
• Perform and/or assist supervising physician with procedures and patient care as requested.
• Perform other procedures as designated by the attending/supervising physician.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited PA/NP Program.
• Michigan PA/NP License.
• BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification.
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
• Maintain CME activity as required by the State and National licensing board.
• Hospital experience.
• Successful completion of surgical rotations.
• Neurosurgery experience preferred.
