About the Role

Responsible for organizing and managing patients of Neurosurgery at Sparrow Hospital under the clinical guidance and supervision of the neurosurgeons. Provides knowledgeable first assistance to physicians performing surgical procedures. Ensures efficient day-to-day operations of the service, allowing neurosurgeons to utilize their time effectively.

Responsibilities

• Manage, develop, implement, and evaluate the overall postoperative patient plan of care in collaboration with the attending physician and health team using daily rounds.
• Ensure accurate and timely completion of patient charts, including history and physical, internal admission notes, consults, daily progress notes, and discharge summaries for neurosurgery patients.
• Collect and ensure appropriate follow-up of laboratory, pathology, radiology, and other reports.
• Communicate with neurosurgeons, nursing staff, residents, and other medical team members throughout the day regarding changes in patient status.
• Solve patient problems within the limits of knowledge and experience under direct supervision of neurosurgeons.
• Perform ED triage activities for neurosurgeons.
• Perform clinical duties as required for neurosurgery patients.
• Collaborate with the healthcare team in planning and coordinating care of neurosurgery patients.
• Attend pertinent conferences, including patient presentations as opportunities arise.
• Ensure continuity of neurosurgery patient care.
• Maintain up-to-date surgical skills through CME and personal ongoing training.
• Serve as a liaison/preceptor for residents on neurosurgery services.

Requirements

• Certificate and licensure by appropriate organizations.
• State of Michigan Certification as a Physician's Assistant.
• Minimum of 2 years experience in neurosurgery procedures, including general neurosurgery cases.
• Minimum of 2 years experience with neurosurgery and/or emergency services.
• Graduate of an approved Physician's Assistant Program.

• Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of patients served.
