About the role
This position will work closely with our neurosurgery team to identify patients who are candidates for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) or Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) in addition to providing primary neurological care.
Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical examinations on patients using medical instruments and equipment, ascertaining symptoms indicative of neurological disorders including cognitive/behavioral injuries of the brain, cerebrovascular diseases (strokes, sleep disorders, peripheral nervous system infections, brain and spinal cord tumors, neurodegenerative disorders, myelitis, movement disorders, coma, stupor and encephalopathy)
- Order, perform and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests such as CT scans, MRIs, EEGs, myelograms and bone scans, and other laboratory and radiographic studies to develop a treatment plan for Neurologic conditions
- Implement therapeutic intervention for specific conditions, where appropriate, prescribing medications and recommended dietary and physical therapy activity programs, and refer patient to specialists for additional care
- Hospital duties to include consultations, admissions, and provision of treatment and therapeutic plan for hospitalized patients, reports, discharge planning and discharge summaries
- Assist in the planning of Neurologic services at Semmes Murphey and maintain a high standard of integrated patient care
- Opportunities to design, conduct and/or participate in research studies
- Assist in the development of junior medical officers and other staff in training, where required
Requirements
- Complete a degree from an accredited school of medicine
- Complete an American College of Graduate Medical Education accredited program in neurology
- Pass required exams prior to completion of residency (Board Eligible)
- Board Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) within the time allowed after completion of Residency/Fellowship
- Maintain a controlled drug prescription certificate
- Maintain licensure in the state practicing
