Neurodiagnostic Tech II

Responsibilities

• Performs and maintains competency in electroencephalograms, portable inpatient EEGs by applying suitable electrodes on predetermined positions on the patient's head, checking electrode performance, calibrating and adjusting test apparatus, and selecting electrode combinations based on individual cases.
• Prepares patients for exams and performs exams and procedures, gathering comprehensive patient history, neurological symptomatology, and medication information from patients, records, and family members.
• Explains test procedures to patients and family members.
• Performs procedures according to laboratory standards, implementing alternative methods and adjusting controls to obtain optimal recordings, including changes to equipment settings, use of extra electrodes, montages, and activation procedures.
• Recognizes patient or environmental artifacts, documents them, and takes measures to eliminate or monitor them.
• Devises and standardizes neurodiagnostic tests for clinic use.
• May perform Intraoperative Monitoring with supervision.
• May perform ambulatory EEG monitoring, EEG monitoring during intracarotid Sodium Amytal procedures (WADAS), Epilepsy Monitoring Units (EMUs), Evoke Potentials, and other modalities based on site-specific needs.
• May assist physicians in outpatient clinics with Nerve Conduction Studies and EMGs based on site-specific needs.
• Performs Cerebral Death Evaluation studies.
• May perform TCD (transcranial ultrasound of the Circle of Willis) based on site-specific needs.
• Troubleshoots equipment problems, repairs them, or reports issues to the supervisor immediately.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served, including assessing data reflective of patient status and interpreting age-specific needs.

Requirements

• Electroencephalographic Technologist registration (R EEG T) issued by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) must be obtained within 1 year.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) must be obtained within 6 months unless exempted by the department leader.
• High School Graduate.
• Typically requires 2 years of experience in a Neurodiagnostic Tech role.

Skills

• Excellent interpersonal and patient service skills.
• Intermediate computer skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Ability to operate all necessary equipment.
• Position requires travel and may involve exposure to road and weather hazards.
• Must sit, stand, walk, and twist throughout the workday.
• Must be able to:
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
  • Lift up to 20 lbs. overhead.
  • Carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
  • Push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
  • Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with assistance.
• Work environment may contain potential exposure to blood, body fluids, or other hazards, requiring the ability to work in such conditions and wear protective clothing as necessary.
• Exposed to a normal office environment.
