Neurodiagnostic Tech

Utilizes specialized technical skills to perform Neurodiagnostic (ND) procedures without direct supervision. Prepares patients for and conducts both routine and specialized ND procedures in one area of specialization (EEG, EMG). Must meet competency standards in designated area of specialization within 6 months of hire date, including both adult and pediatric/neonate patients.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates and prioritizes scheduling of inpatient and outpatient procedures while ensuring proper document flow and storage according to departmental guidelines.
• Assures completion of all patient testing procedures, coordinating inpatient demand with outpatient schedule within established time frames.
• Documents procedures performed in the patient chart within established guidelines.
• Evaluates and analyzes final reports to facilitate proper billing procedures in a timely and accurate manner.
• Obtains necessary information from clinical records, requisitions, or patient questioning to enable awareness of special circumstances and achieve quality studies.
• Performs ND procedures in one area of specialization (EEG or EMG) in accordance with policy and procedure guidelines, including at the bedside and in critical care areas under potentially emergent conditions.
• Meets all competencies related to the designated area of specialization (EEG or EMG).
• Assures accurate recording of electrical impulses of the neurological system by:
  • Exercising thorough knowledge of the impulses being recorded.
  • Demonstrating proper set-up for designated tests.
  • Detecting and eliminating artifact.
  • Selecting electrode combinations based on the type of study performed.
  • Describing normal and abnormal clinical manifestations observed during the procedure.
  • Utilizing a variety of activating procedures.
• Interacts with each patient on an individual basis to obtain the best cooperative effort possible in accordance with policy and procedure guidelines.
• Prepares initial data for use by the physician in the formulation of ND reports according to established departmental guidelines.
• Informs patients and families regarding the nature and significance of the procedure to be performed.
• Accurately observes, records, and reports all patient concerns, symptoms, and reactions in a timely manner.
• Performs or assists with new or technically difficult procedures in one area of specialization (EEG or EMG).
• Assists in the development of new procedures.
• Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span to assess and interpret patient data relative to age-specific needs.
• Participates in cleaning and maintenance of all equipment, detecting malfunctions, making minor adjustments, and reporting repair needs.
• Engages in educational and inservice opportunities to increase professional level of patient care and understanding of Neuro Labs services.
• Reviews educational materials on a self-paced basis, maintaining acceptable academic performance standards.
• Maintains Continuing Education (CEU) requirements as determined by the department.
• Performs or assists with research activities according to specific protocol guidelines, maintaining proper documentation.
• Provides inservices on ND procedures and equipment operation to medical professionals.
• Assists in the instruction and hands-on technical training of ND trainees, house staff, and medical staff.
• Participates in planning and implementing change, maintaining and improving productivity through staff meetings, committees, and discussions with supervisors.

Requirements

• Must meet one of the following educational requirements:
  • Associate’s Degree, preferably in an Allied Health Field.
  • Graduate of a program through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP ND).
  • Completion of ASET EEG Core Curriculum.
• Must be certified in one of the following or obtain within two (2) years of hire:
  • Registered Nerve Conduction Study Technologist (R.NCS.T.) through ABRET or AAET.
  • Certified Nerve Conduction Technologist (CNCT) through ABEM.
  • Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist (R.EEG.T) through ABRET.
• Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Allied Health Field.
• Graduate of a CAAHEP ND program.
• Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist (R.EEG.T) through ABRET upon hire.
• ASET member of the Neurodiagnostic Society.

Skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to communicate appropriately with physicians, staff, and patients.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift, push, or pull a minimum of 40 pounds.
• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.

Working Environment

Performs ND procedures in accordance with policy and procedure guidelines in the Neuro Labs, at the bedside, and in critical care areas of the facility under potentially emergent conditions.
