Job Responsibilities
- Affixing with fish culture activities at Bayless Hatchery and DWC. This encompasses all culture facets including broodstock collection, spawning, pond stocking, fertilization, feeding, water quality monitoring, harvesting, and distribution.
- Species to be included are striped bass, bluegill, redbreast, robust redhorse, channel catfish, tilapia, and American shad.
- Notifying supervisor and implementing corrective measures in case of power outages, dissolved oxygen issues, or disease occurrences.
- Maintaining neatness and functionality of Bayless Hatchery and DWC grounds, culture rearing systems, ponds, tanks, and raceways, and buildings.
- Participating in pond filling, draining, fertilization, and aquatic weed treatments in rearing ponds for phase I striped bass production or phase II grow-out production.
- Ensuring water quality parameters are met and overseeing proper feeding and upkeep of fish in rearing ponds.
- Assisting with the harvest and distribution of fish for state and federal hatcheries.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
- A high school diploma and two (2) years of related experience in wildlife, fisheries, or agricultural work; or an associate degree in the technical sciences.
- Preferred qualifications include knowledge of common fishery practices and procedures; some knowledge in operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, boats, lawn mowers, tractors, small equipment, etc.; and basic proficiency in common trade skills.
- Experience with trailering, coupling, towing, backing, and general trailer operation.
- Ability to swim, work in adverse weather conditions, lift heavy objects, and work comfortably in and around water.
- Ability to participate in infrequent overnight travel.
