National Director, Field Medical Affairs - Ophthalmology
About the Role
The National Director, Field Medical Affairs is a pivotal role that provides specialized, field-oriented expertise in ophthalmology, particularly retinal indications, through leadership support of our client. This position functions as a highly trained, field-based scientific expert in retinal therapy, setting a strong example for the field Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team. The role involves engaging healthcare professionals and leaders in clinical, scientific, value-based care, and research-based peer-to-peer scientific exchange around therapeutics, specifically supporting our client’s product.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the MSL team, including recruitment, retention, coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
- Establish a connected and productive work environment, fostering trust, respect, and team achievements.
- Oversee Key Opinion Leader (KOL) and Healthcare Practitioner (HCP) planning, engagement, and development at regional and national levels.
- Collaborate with client and EVERSANA leadership to set team goals and objectives aligned with product scientific imperatives and brand plans.
- Develop and execute comprehensive training programs to ensure data fluency and subject matter expertise within the team.
- Implement effective onboarding, team meetings, and mentoring sessions to support individual and team development.
- Conduct field coaching and territory visits to ensure effective territory management and data fluency.
- Collect, analyze, and report field insights to internal stakeholders, ensuring alignment with objectives.
- Maintain deep clinical and scientific expertise in retinal therapy, particularly neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).
- Collaborate with clinical operations to support clinical trial needs and investigator-initiated trial (IIT) proposals.
- Ensure cross-functional collaboration with commercial, market access, and internal teams while adhering to compliance and regulatory guidelines.
- Lead the development and execution of medical strategies, tactical plans, and resource deployment to achieve field-level objectives.
- Represent the client at medical meetings, congresses, and through scientific booth coverage, providing internal reports on key activities.
- Adhere to corporate SOPs and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory guidelines governing scientific interactions.
- Manage team activities within the assigned budget and ensure proper documentation of KOL interactions and responses.
- Provide medical support, clinical input, and training for internal teams as requested.
- Assist in publication planning and execution, including manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and congress submissions.
- Monitor and improve field scientific communication strategies to maximize medical impact and stakeholder engagement.
- Oversee field medical business objectives, ensuring client satisfaction and achievement of program goals.
- For new clients, lead the build and operationalization of the MSL team in collaboration with EVERSANA leadership.
- Supervise department staff, including performance reviews, salary changes, promotions, and disciplinary actions.
- Provide monthly metric reporting to EVERSANA and the client.
Qualifications
- Advanced degree (OD, MD, PhD, PharmD, MSN, or NP/PA) is required.
- 4+ years of industry experience and 2+ years of demonstrated leadership experience managing field-based teams, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Ophthalmology and retina specialty field experience is required.
- Excellence in scientific acumen, with the ability to understand and communicate complex science to diverse audiences.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing market dynamics and competitive challenges.
- High sense of urgency and commitment to achieving objectives with excellence.
- Strong planning, organizational, and teamwork skills to support leadership and initiative.
