Narrative Coach
Stand Together is a philanthropic community that helps America’s boldest changemakers tackle the root causes of the nation’s biggest problems—from education and the economy to broken communities and toxic division. The organization provides partners with funding, thought leadership, a peer network, and a playbook for applying proven principles to transform lives and society.
About the role
The Narrative Coach will provide communications subject‑matter expertise to support Catalyst partners, a network of national nonprofit organizations. The coach will help nonprofit leaders explore and articulate narratives that showcase principles in action, adapting existing narrative work for various delivery formats such as op‑eds, keynote remarks, panels, and podcasts. Remote candidates will be considered on a case‑by‑case basis.
Responsibilities
- Coach & advise nonprofit leaders: build high‑trust relationships with founders, leaders, and spokespeople; help them find, refine, and confidently deliver their organizational and personal narrative.
- Adapt narrative to delivery format: translate existing narrative work into new formats (op‑eds, keynote remarks, panels, podcast appearances) so the story lands regardless of medium.
- Build the system, not just the sessions: contribute to formalizing narrative‑coaching methodology (playbooks, repeatable frameworks) to enable scaling beyond individual coaches.
- Contribute to strategy and continuous improvement: synthesize patterns across engagements to identify narrative gaps limiting growth, funding, or partnerships.
- Manage a portfolio of coaching engagements: support multiple nonprofit leaders and organizations simultaneously while maintaining responsiveness, organization, preparation, and follow‑through.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in coaching, leadership development, or communications with direct, hands‑on narrative/storytelling work.
- Prior operating experience in marketing or communications (agency, brand, or nonprofit communications).
- Strong diagnostic capability to identify why a leader’s story isn’t landing and how to improve it for maximum impact.
- Outstanding listening, relationship‑building, and interpersonal skills; ability to establish trust and deliver candid feedback with empathy.
- Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, evolving environments.
- Comfort holding both a coaching relationship and an external‑facing deliverable within the same engagement.
- Enthusiasm for Stand Together’s vision and principled approach, and commitment to its culture of transformation, innovation, entrepreneurialism, humility, and respect.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience in nonprofit or philanthropic ecosystems.
- Track record of building narrative or communications tools/frameworks that scale beyond individual engagements.
- Experience coaching founder‑led, mission‑driven, or high‑autonomy organizations.
Benefits
- 6% 401(k) match with immediate vesting.
- Flexible time off.
- Comprehensive health and dental plans.
- Wellness and mental‑health support through Peloton and Talkspace.
- Opportunity to join a community of over 1,400 employees dedicated to improving lives and driving innovative solutions to complex social challenges.
- Non‑hierarchical environment that empowers employees to discover, develop, and apply their unique talents.
