The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. The minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian, or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree. If hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, there is a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. You must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB).

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualification: Bachelor's Degree
  • License Requirement: Valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit upon hire
  • Enrollment in a Program: Required for employment
  • Licensing Requirements: Must meet Hawaii licensing requirements within 3 years of employment
  • Active Pursuit: Must demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting licensing requirements

Pay and Benefits

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.

  • Compensation: 10-month teachers are compensated according to the applicable Bargaining Unit 05 10-month salary schedule for working a 10-month work year.

  • Tax Shelter Annuity (TSA): Participating employees may contribute pre-tax dollars to an employee-selected investment service provider.
  • Deferred Compensation: Voluntary payroll deductions for a tax-sheltered retirement investment program.
  • Temporary Disability Insurance: Benefits for a disability caused by a non-work-related injury or illness.
  • Workers' Compensation: Benefits covering medical expenses and partial wage support.

Union & Collective Bargaining

Employees have the right to join the union for collective bargaining with the State and employee representation. Some employee unions provide discounts, insurance, and other opportunities.

  • Will you have completed a bachelor's degree or higher by the effective start date of the teaching position?
  • Are you currently employed as a Teacher, Librarian, or Counselor (BU05) in the Hawaii State Department of Education?
  • Finishing a Hawaii-based Teacher's Education Program:
    • I will be completing my State Approved Teacher's Education Program (SATEP) by the end of this semester?
    • If hired, I know I must submit documents to prove I am enrolled in a SATEP and I must complete it within 3 years of employment.
    • I am currently enrolled in a SATEP and will not graduate by the end of this semester.
    • I completed an out-of-state SATEP.
    • I already completed a SATEP in Hawaii.
