Hawaii State Department of Education teaching positions require a Bachelor’s degree (except for designated Career and Technology Education roles). If hired without completing a Teacher’s Education Program, you have up to three years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license and must enroll in a qualifying program immediately. You must demonstrate active progress toward licensure each year. It is your responsibility to ensure the program aligns with the teaching line you are hired for. Upon hire, you must hold either a valid Hawaii teaching license or an Emergency Hire Permit.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum qualification for teacher, librarian, or counselor positions)
  • Valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit required at time of hire
  • If hired without a completed Teacher’s Education Program, you must enroll in a State-Approved Teacher’s Education Program (SATEP) and complete it within three years
  • Must demonstrate active pursuit of Hawaii licensing requirements annually, as set by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB)

Pay

New employees receive their first paycheck within the first three pay periods. Paydays are on the 5th and 20th of each month (or the previous business day if these dates fall on a holiday or weekend).
