About the role
Provides routine direct and indirect patient care in a hospital, clinic, or home health care setting under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or physician. This role supports healthcare providers and ensures patients receive exceptional care in a compassionate and innovative environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies during emergency situations.
- In the psychiatric setting:
- Aid patients in reality orientation and participate in behavior modification plans/therapy.
- Provide informal support therapy to patients/families.
- Deliver verbal de-escalation of potentially aggressive patients.
- Aid in the physical management of aggressive/out-of-control patients.
- Facilitate age-appropriate play for children.
- Monitor the therapeutic milieu activities on assigned unit to ensure emotional and safety needs of patients are met.
- Observe, collect, and document patient information obtained while providing care and promptly report significant changes in the patient's condition to a registered nurse or physician.
- Provide assistance to patients and their families during admission, orientation to the hospital/clinic/home health experience, and discharge.
- Provide care/treatments to patients as outlined in the plan of care, including:
- Measurement of vital signs, height, and weight.
- Specimen collection.
- Skin preps/scrubs and catheter care.
- Capillary blood glucose checks.
- Simple wound care and range of motion exercises.
- Postural drainage.
- Supportive patient and family interactions.
- Provide direct personal care to patients for routine activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with ambulation.
- Provide indirect care to patients and assigned area, including:
- Cleaning the work area and changing linens.
- Re-stocking supplies and cleaning/sterilizing instruments.
- Transporting patients/supplies/specimens.
- Assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
- Performing routine clerical functions.
- Reinforce routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions.
- Distribute patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED.
- Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
- Six (6) months of relevant nursing assistant experience, which may include a nursing assistant course.
- Fluent in verbal and written English language and able to develop basic computer skills.
Job Details
This is a Per Diem, onsite position with a variable schedule and standard hours of up to 4.00 per week. The role is part of the NGH Nursing Float Pool at Nash UNC Health Care.
