Responsibilities

  • Teach advanced Music Theory concepts, including notation, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, chord progressions, rhythm, meter, harmony, counterpoint, and ear training.
  • Explain Roman numeral analysis, voice leading rules, four-part chorale writing, and formal structures to prepare students for AP Music Theory, college courses, and conservatory auditions.
  • Guide students in harmonic analysis, part-writing, aural skills development, interval/chord identification by ear, four-part harmony, musical form analysis, figured bass realization, and sight-singing with solfege.
  • Connect theoretical knowledge to practical musicianship, composition, arranging, and performance interpretation.
  • Adapt instruction using ear training software, part-writing exercises, and score analysis for students from beginner to advanced levels (AP, college, conservatory prep).
  • Identify and address common student challenges (e.g., aural interval identification, voice leading rules, chromatic harmony).
  • Use multiple teaching approaches to explain concepts and tailor instruction to individual learning styles.

Requirements

  • Deep knowledge of Music Theory, including advanced topics like Roman numeral analysis, voice leading, and four-part chorale writing.
  • Familiarity with music theory curricula and common student challenges (e.g., aural skills, chromatic harmony).
  • Ability to adapt instruction for different learning styles and student needs.
  • Strong communication skills and an engaging, friendly teaching style.
