Responsibilities
- Teach harmonic analysis, part-writing, and aural skills development.
- Guide students in identifying intervals and chords by ear, writing four-part harmony following voice-leading rules, analyzing musical form, realizing figured bass, and sight-singing with solfege.
- Connect theoretical knowledge to practical musicianship, applying music theory to composition, arranging, and performance interpretation.
- Adapt instruction using ear-training software, part-writing exercises, and score analysis to support students from beginner to advanced levels (AP Music Theory, college coursework, conservatory preparation).
- Identify and address common student challenges (e.g., aural interval identification, voice-leading rules, chromatic harmony).
- Explain concepts using multiple approaches to accommodate different learning styles.
Requirements
- Advanced mastery of music theory topics: notation, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, chord progressions, rhythm, meter, harmony, counterpoint, and form analysis.
- Ability to teach Roman numeral analysis, voice-leading rules, four-part chorale writing, and formal structures for AP Music Theory, college courses, and conservatory auditions.
- Familiarity with music theory curricula and common student challenges.
- Strong communication skills and an engaging, adaptive teaching style.
