Museum Technician (History)
About the role
This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library. This position performs a variety of technical duties in connection with the management of the museum collection, including inventorying, registration, documentation and digitization of museum objects. Duties also include exhibit work, public outreach and professional support within and outside the department.
Responsibilities
- Ensure inventory information is accurate in the collections management system and manage physical conditions of the collection.
- Use digital camera(s) and/or scanner(s) to create clear, appropriate digital images for a wide variety of artifacts and collection records following standard museum and NARA guidelines.
- Complete assigned tasks related to exhibit research, object selection, and text editing and formatting, as needed.
- Gather data for reporting and develop and create content for social media platforms.
- Apply agency-wide and site-specific methods and standards for accessioning and cataloging, including numbering, description, object labeling, and other associated tasks for museum holdings.
Requirements
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
Qualifications
- SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-5, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-4 grade level. This experience must be related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. For this position, specialized experience is defined as experience:
- Following established procedures while handling objects of historical or cultural significance;
- Assisting in cataloging or inventorying objects in museum collections.
- EDUCATION: Successful completion of 4 years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled.
- COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Details on combining education and experience are provided in the online questionnaire.
