Museum Curator (Art)
About the role
This position is located in the Smithsonian Institution's (SI) Office of Museum Research and Scholarship of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). The primary purpose of the position is to perform scholarly, technical, and/or applied research related to the Native/Indigenous cultures, arts, and histories of the Western Hemisphere (North, Central, and South America).
Responsibilities
Perform scholarly, technical, and/or applied research related to the anthropology, ethnography, history, art history, or archaeology of Native/Indigenous peoples of the Americas (North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean).
Serve as an associate curator of a specific portion of NMAI’s collections based on the incumbent’s training, knowledge, and experience in Native/Indigenous cultures, arts, and histories of the Western Hemisphere.
Initiate and participate constructively in NMAI collaborations, partnerships, and other scholarly relationships with academic and cultural institutions, including tribal museums, cultural centers, and community-based scholars.
Develop and maintain a balanced collection, which may involve participation in efforts towards collections expansion.
Contribute to exhibit and program planning and development, including research and preparing content, providing technical guidance, and incorporating Native/Indigenous or community viewpoints in interpretation.
Requirements
Specialized experience is defined as scholarly, technical, and/or applied research related to the anthropology, ethnography, history, art history, or archaeology of Native/Indigenous peoples of the Americas (North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean).
Knowledge and training in the anthropology, ethnography, history, art history, or archaeology of Native/Indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere with emphasis on contextualizing Native/Indigenous arts and culture.
Ability to conduct anthropological, archaeological, historical, or art historical research on NMAI and other museum collections.
