Munitions Handler (FLO/MVO).

About the role

Manages and stores sensitive munitions using strict explosive compatibility guidelines, security regulations, and specialized warehousing methods. Applies precise weight, dimensional, and capacity limits to safely configure explosive storage and stencil required cargo markings. Executes shipping directives, written work orders, and safety regulations to accurately process, document, and inventory munitions. Operates heavy machinery and transport vehicles safely in confined areas to handle highly sensitive, hazardous, or toxic materials.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
• Completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the required level of physical health and ability.
• Subject to pre-employment screening and random testing thereafter, including testing based on reasonable suspicion and after on-duty accidents.
• Subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban (Lautenberg Amendment).
• Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
• Term employment subject to a one-year trial period; employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.
• Must possess or obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment a valid CLD H license.
• Must complete Explosive Safety courses within 3 months of hiring and/or availability of computer access.
• Must complete ammunition and explosive classroom training within 6 months after hiring and/or availability of training slot.
• Must obtain and maintain a Forklift License for operation of a forklift with the capacity of 10,000 pounds within 6 months of entering the position.

Qualifications

• Ability to independently perform visual inspections for ammunition storage facilities of unexpended/expended ammunition items.
• Ability to assist with physical inventories.
• Ability to operate standard weight-handling equipment or small trucks.
• Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.
• Dexterity and safety awareness in handling hazardous materials.
• Proficiency in technical practices and use of measuring instruments.

Physical Effort

Work requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods; bending, stooping, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. May lift and carry items up to 40 pounds; heavier items are moved with weight-handling equipment or assistance. Moderate physical effort is exerted in operating heavier vehicles and forklifts, including hand and foot controls, driving, turning, starting, stopping, raising, lowering, and tilting loads. Strain may be caused by vibration from equipment.

Working Conditions

Performs assignments indoors in comfortable and uncomfortable areas, and outdoors in all but the most extreme weather. Work areas may be hot, dusty, drafty, inadequately lighted, or ventilated. Subject to cuts, abrasions, equipment-related injuries, or serious accidents while driving, unloading, or handling materials. Drives in varied traffic conditions and on public roads. Forklift operators work inside in damp, drafty areas and occasionally outside in all weather. Risk of injury from shifting loads, toppling stacks, overturning forklifts, falling objects, or collisions with moving equipment. Works with and near unusually hazardous agents and unstable materials for 25 to 65 percent of the total work cycle.
