About the role

This is a managerial position responsible for assisting and supporting the implementation of public outreach programs. The incumbent will research, collect, and provide information on a wide variety of topics and utilize many different communication tools including written reports, speeches, media presentations, and social media. This role represents the viewpoints of the organization, coordinates communications with the media, and may supervise lower-level staff. Work is performed under general direction with latitude for independent judgment, often outside conventional hours and under tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, produces, and edits multimedia content—including video, audio, graphics, photography, and digital assets—to support internal and external communications.
  • Writes, edits, and reviews press items such as press releases, editorials, letters, and other communications for public consumption.
  • Develops and manages marketing and communication campaigns using AI-assisted tools for content creation, video editing, audience analysis, and digital engagement.
  • Manages and maintains the organization's official website, social media content, and live events, ensuring consistent branding and messaging across platforms.
  • Plans, organizes, and supports public events and agency-wide initiatives, including setup, breakdown, photography, videography, and media relations.
  • Reviews marketing and communication materials such as brochures, flyers, public service announcements, and other outreach materials.
  • Keeps up to date on issues of concern to the organization and the public, as well as emerging public issues impacting policies or operations.
  • Ensures all communication materials comply with accessibility standards, copyright laws, and organizational branding guidelines.
  • Collaborates with employees, administrators, educators, the public, and the media to gather information and represent the organization at public meetings and events.
  • Assists in maintaining databases and files with contact information and reference materials on various topics.
  • Researches public policies, educational initiatives, community concerns, and emerging public issues to strengthen BOCES communications.
  • May train, supervise, and direct the work of lower-level staff.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of marketing, public relations, and effective communications principles and practices.
  • Good knowledge of verbal and written communication techniques, including writing style, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and strong editing skills.
  • Good knowledge of social media, visual/graphic tools, video, and camera experience.
  • Good knowledge of computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, email, database, and photographic/video software.
  • Ability to research, verify information, and develop it into informative reports.
  • Ability to proofread and edit prose and graphic materials.
  • Physical and personal characteristics commensurate with the demands of the position.
  • Possession of a valid New York State Driver License at time of application and throughout employment.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include one of the following:

  • (A) Master's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Public Administration, Marketing, Advertising, Graphic Design/Media Arts, Digital Media Production, or a related field; OR
  • (B) Bachelor's degree in the above fields AND one (1) year of full-time work experience in public relations, marketing, communications, public administration, digital media production, or a closely related field; OR
  • (C) Associate's degree in the above fields AND three (3) years of full-time work experience as indicated in (B); OR
  • (D) An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience between the limits of (B) and (C).

Note: Your degree or college credit must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Pay

$75,000 - $80,000
