About the role
This position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in carpentry, painting, electrical and plumbing.
Responsibilities
- Constructs and repairs structural woodwork/equipment, working from blueprints, drawings, and/or verbal instructions.
- Repairs and maintains plumbing systems, fixtures, pipes, and equipment for buildings under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Assists in painting and refurbishing the interior and exterior of structures under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Installs, repairs, and maintains electrical fixtures, equipment, and wiring at buildings and facilities under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Receives and completes work orders for each project by listing the amount of time and materials used.
- Climbs ladders to reach, replace, and repair interior and exterior lighting fixtures, bulbs, and other electronic components.
- Operates a light truck to transport tools, materials, and equipment to various work sites.
- Performs preventive maintenance on electrical equipment, fixtures, and wiring.
- Repairs new and existing plumbing systems; including valves, drains, basins, toilet fixtures and sinks.
- Cuts and threads pipes and uses a variety of standard tools and equipment.
- Estimates required materials for projects by visiting work sites, reviewing work orders and sketches; purchases required materials.
- Applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures of buildings or structures.
- Applies a primer or sealer to make a suitable surface to apply a finished coat of paint.
- Constructs, erects, installs, and repairs various structures and fixtures of wood, plywood and wallboard conforming to local building codes.
- Selects proper lumber and other building materials to complete required projects.
- Operates equipment such as tractors and implements, skid steers, mowers, chainsaws, and weed eaters.
Secondary Duties And Responsibilities
- Maintains a supply of standard repair parts, prepares requisitions and purchases supplies.
- Aids another skilled craftsman, as assigned.
- Performs other related duties as required by the Parks and Recreation Director.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of the standard practices and safety precautions of the construction trade.
- Knowledge of basic electrical principles, practices, and techniques.
- Knowledge of basic plumbing principles, practices, and techniques.
- Knowledge of basic carpentry principles, practices and techniques.
- Skill in the operation of hand and light power tools.
- Skill in the operation of electrical test meters and various gauges.
- Skill in the operation of an automatic transmission automobile.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams and technical manuals.
- Ability to review work of contractors for compliance with specifications.
- Ability to direct the work of employees or contractors, if necessary.
- Ability to understand written and oral instructions.
- Ability to work safely and effectively at considerable heights.
Education And Experience
Required: High School Diploma. Two (2) years of work experience in general maintenance. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements
- Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver's License before employment and maintain licensure for duration of employment in this position.
