Multi-Platform News Director
Nexstar Sacramento, a top 20 market, is seeking a dynamic leader with excellent news judgment to oversee all aspects of KTXL FOX40 news. The News Director is a people-first leader responsible for hiring and leading diverse teams in the execution of top-quality newscasts that make a difference in the community. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in digital-first execution and a passion for delivering news content across multiple platforms while growing the audience.
About the role
The News Director reports to the Market Vice President & General Manager and must successfully motivate and lead a team within a changing media landscape. The role requires a proven record in breaking news, enterprise and investigative reporting, as well as the ability to drive audiences using digital products. The candidate must demonstrate skills in recruiting, developing, and retaining high-level talent, managing resources, and executing research-based strategic plans.
Responsibilities
- Create and execute strategic plans to grow the audience.
- Actively promote cultural change and drive innovation to support new ways of working, with a focus on continuous improvement for a high-quality, professional, and cohesive newsroom.
- Supervise Assistant News Director, Executive Producers, Producers, and anchor talent.
- Provide strategic direction for day-to-day news coverage, breaking news, special projects, investigative reporting, and special event coverage across all distribution channels, including OTT.
- Collaborate with the team to operationalize research.
- Grow and develop a diverse staff, including identifying, recruiting, and retaining top talent.
- Interview, hire, coach, and develop employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; and provide coaching as needed.
- Address complaints and resolve problems promptly.
- Interpret and execute research from multiple sources to deliver the best news product for the Sacramento market.
- Prepare and execute department operating and personnel budgets.
- Review news programs for critique of production, news content, and overall performance.
- Engage with the community to determine news needs and interests.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications, Journalism, or Broadcast (preferred).
- At least 7 years’ experience in newsroom management.
- Experience with breaking news, weather coverage, major news events, investigative, and enterprise journalism.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while adjusting to shifting priorities.
- Solid business acumen with an understanding of all content platforms.
Pay
Salary starts at $175,000 for well-qualified candidates.
