MTSS Instructional Coach (TOSA) (1.0 FTE) Ben Rush Elementary
About the role
The Instructional Coach supports the instructional growth of teachers through coaching and modeling, helping create school communities that foster belonging, agency, and achievement for every student. The coach works in concert with building and district leaders to provide job-embedded coaching and professional learning for teachers, fostering inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments. This role is critical in improving student achievement and creating inclusive environments and high-functioning Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in schools. Coaches are part of the MTSS-I team and promote reflection, provide guidance, and structure where needed, with a focus on strengths, collaboration, and elements in implementing MTSS systems. They help ensure high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, resource gathering, and providing feedback to teachers. This is not a supervisory position.
Responsibilities
- Supports the instructional growth of teachers through coaching, support, and modeling to cultivate learning environments that spark students' critical thinking, passion for learning, and academic achievement.
- Promotes equitable learning experiences for students through coaching, support, modeling, and reflective questioning with teachers and staff.
- Co-facilitates the MTSS-Intervention team in collaboration with building administrators.
- Supports teachers and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in developing skills and processes to provide high-quality, evidence-based instruction using adopted curricular tools and instructional practices.
- Supports teams in facilitating effective PLCs by providing tools and protocols and fostering effective data analysis and team reflection.
- Helps teachers, PLCs, and the MTSS-I team surface, examine, and address disproportionality in student outcomes.
- Works collaboratively with building administrators to use feedback data from stakeholders to determine professional learning needs and interests.
- Coaches and supports teachers in implementing:
- Effective, inclusive, and innovative instructional practices.
- Effective analysis of student data.
- Vibrant and inclusive classroom environments.
- Culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy.
- Student agency and self-directed learning.
- Effective classroom-based interventions.
- Differentiation for students with diverse needs and strengths, including targeted supports for students receiving special education, highly capable, multilingual services, etc.
- Provides coaching and support for new teachers on a regular basis.
- Provides research and support for using effective practices aligned with The Framework for Teaching and the Washington State 8 Criteria.
- Supports building administrators and teachers in facilitating professional development for staff, helping to hone learning targets, identify coaching connections, and/or facilitate small-group interaction.
- Engages in regular professional development to deepen coaching practice and instructional expertise.
- Works collaboratively with key stakeholders from multiple departments (Accelerated Programs, Professional Learning, Multilingual Services, Special Education, Student Services, Equity, School Support, and Teaching and Learning) to design and deliver professional learning, gather/connect teachers to resources, and provide instructional guidance aligned with district curriculum and initiatives.
Requirements
- Washington State teaching certificate.
- Related Bachelor’s Degree.
- Five or more years of teaching experience.
- Experience providing mentorship, coaching, and/or leading professional development for peers.
- Experience partnering with administrators and/or educators to shift instructional practices.
Skills
- Knowledge of research-based instructional practices and the MTSS framework.
- Demonstrated commitment to in-depth collaboration for whole team/program success.
- Demonstrated commitment to anti-racist actions and beliefs.
- Experience teaching in elementary schools (experience in multiple schools and/or a variety of contexts preferred).
- Teacher leadership experience, including planning, leading, implementing, and sustaining long-term projects and related professional learning.
- Familiarity with effective Professional Learning Communities.
- Experience implementing and commitment to culturally responsive teaching.
- Expertise and/or experience in facilitating adult learning.
- Deep understanding of effective instructional practices for diverse learning needs and the ability to directly support others in improving instructional practice.
- Knowledge and understanding of special education processes and specially designed instruction.
- Knowledge of how to effectively develop and adapt student acceleration plans.
- Knowledge of Common Core and WIDA Standards.
- Ability to work with and lead a diverse group of adults.
- Demonstrated ability to learn and integrate new technology into effective instructional practice.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and equitable outcomes for all students through quality instruction, high expectations, and culturally sustaining teaching practices.
- Commitment to ongoing professional learning to grow and further professional practices.
Work Environment
The role is performed indoors under minimal temperature changes and in a generally hazard-free environment. The job requires:
- 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing.
- Frequent reaching, handling, fingering, and/or feeling.
- Seldom lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
- Seldom climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling.
Pay
Paid per teacher salary schedule with a base contract plus additional contracts for LEAP days and Responsibility. Includes an additional technology stipend and Professional Fund. See the LWEA salary schedule posted on the website.
