MSAD Special Teacher- ASL Specialist

About the role

The Special Teacher-ASL Specialist position at the MN State Academy for the Deaf is a ten-month per year position. The work schedule follows the school calendar and includes 3 weeks in July for the summer school program.

Responsibilities

• Contributes to the design and delivery of academic instructional programs to deaf/hard of hearing or deaf/blind students.
• Provides educational instruction and uses a variety of techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors.
• Maintains and assists with Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) testing, rating, and tracking information.

Requirements

• Must possess a valid Deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) Minnesota Teacher license or have the ability to obtain one prior to the start date.
• Knowledge of Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) or similar ASL rating system.
• Knowledge of the deaf/hard of hearing and deaf/blind students and educational practices.
• Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand written policies and procedures and education plans and to maintain records and documentation.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of curriculum, language acquisition and educational best practices as it relates to deaf/hard of hearing students and/or deaf/blind students.
• Experience working with deaf/hard of hearing students.
• Demonstration of advanced sign skills.
