About the role
The Special Teacher-ASL Specialist position at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD) is a ten-month per year position. The work schedule follows the school calendar and includes 3 weeks in July for the summer school program.
Responsibilities
- Contributes to the design and delivery of academic instructional programs to deaf/hard of hearing or deaf/blind students.
- Provides educational instruction and uses a variety of techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors.
- Maintains and assists with Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) testing, rating, and tracking information.
Requirements
- Must possess a valid Deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) Minnesota Teacher license or have the ability to obtain one prior to the start date.
- Knowledge of Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) or similar ASL rating system.
- Knowledge of the deaf/hard of hearing and deaf/blind students and educational practices.
- Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand written policies and procedures and education plans and to maintain records and documentation.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of curriculum, language acquisition and educational best practices as it relates to deaf/hard of hearing students and/or deaf/blind students.
- Experience working with deaf/hard of hearing students.
- Demonstration of advanced sign skills.
Skills
- Fluency in American Sign Language.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (with assistance).
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk throughout the workday.
